Keyboard not Responding

Your keys work intermittently or a section of your keyboard stops responding.

Needed Restart

Restarting your computer may fix any keyboard issues related to Windows. Do this before trying to find another potential cause.

Dirt under Keys

Remove dirt by:

  • spraying compressed air under keys
  • removing crumbs with the point of a knife
  • taking out keys and cleaning with cotton swabs

Bad Connections

This can occur when the keyboard loses connection with the motherboard. Reconnect the keyboard by removing the outer casing of the laptop and finding the connections under the keyboard. These ribbon cables will need to be reconnected for your keyboard to work properly.

Defective Keyboard

Keys are not typing letters and numbers, instead are opening random windows and indenting. Replacement of the keyboard may be the best option.

Laptop will not Turn On

Laptop remains off after using the power button.

Battery is Drained

Plug charger into laptop (and power supply!). Press power button to turn laptop on

Hard Reset is Needed

Remove the battery and power supply and let the laptop sit for a minute. After reinserting battery and plugging in AC Adaptor, press the power button to turn laptop on.

Defective Battery

If the above options do not resolve the problem, replacing the battery is the next step.

Crackling Sound through Speaker

When playing sound through the on-device speakers, sound is distorted or crackling.

Interference from Audio Enhancements

Click on the speaker icon on the right side of the Taskbar and select “Mixer”. Select “Speakers” in the window that comes up. Open the Enhancements tab and disable all audio enhancements by checking the “Disable All Audio Enhancements” box. Click “Apply” then “Ok”.

Outdated Sound Card Drivers

Type “Updates” into the Windows search bar and click on “Windows Updates”. Then select “Check for Updates” to receive a list of possible updates and install all of the updates listed.

Search for “Device Manager” in the Windows search bar. Select “Device Manager”. Search for Sound Card on the device list, right click on it and select “Update Driver Software”. Follow on-screen installation directions.

Damaged or Faulty Speakers

If the above options fail to fix the problem, the speakers within the laptop will need to be replaced.

Laptop is Overheating

Your laptop is hotter than normal or your fan is constantly running. It also may randomly shut down or struggle to perform basic tasks.

Clogged air vents

Check all air vents which are on the sides of the laptop for dirt and blockages.

Fans not working properly

Make sure the fans are working properly by feeling the air vents for hot air blowing out. If you don’t feel any air coming out of the air vents or you don’t hear the fans running once your laptop has been under heavy use for an hour, the cooling fans might have connectivity issues or need replacement.

USB Port Not Working

When connecting a device through the USB port on the laptop, nothing happens or an error is displayed.

Needed Restart

This is a good place to start to see if it will self-correct after restarting.

Port Not Recognized by Laptop

Use the device manager to scan for hardware changes because it might now recognize the USB device connected.

Faulty Motherboard

If the USB ports are not working, there could be damage to the motherboard or it is faulty. You will need to replace the motherboard.
