I would try the new hard drive first since it is cheaper by far. The only thing that is iffy is that you tried booting without the HD in and it still panic'd on you so this of course is not good. I am trying to think of why this would happen. Another thought is to open the Mac and check to make sure everything is still seated correctly. Like the RAM modules etc, since you have it open check all cables as well. Maybe do this before opening it!! I would also try resetting PRAM. I would open your laptop and then use a blow dryer with low heat setting, and blow warm air on the components be sure not to overheat them. Then I would wait 48 hours and power it on and see if it works. I would also agree that if it was just the keyboard not working sure replace it, since more than one thing is not I would look into it a little more before doing the replacement. I honestly think it will be fine after you let it dry a few days. My friends spilled kool-aid on their Mac and I cleaned it up and let it dry it works fine.

Try removing all HDMI cables and then "remove" the power cord for about 10 minutes (powering off is not sufficient ). Then Plug in the power cord, then one HDMI cable and try your device that way. If you believe it to be an issue with your screen I would connect it to an external monitor temporarily to see if you can get a picture to come up.
