Accidentally severed wifi cables when removing screen.

I was given for free this laptop.

Lcd screen was not woking anymore. Laptop worked with VGA monitor fine.

Unfortunately while working on scree replacement i severed one of the cables in approx . Middle of length going from wifi modules (white one), by not securing the weight of the screen, when i unscrewed it.

I was recommended to source the same cable.

Unfortunately no luck on local sources or on ebay.

Many of the videos online recommended stripping the cable, cutting and joining them again with solder, which im afraid i can not do, since the cable would be probably short for screen opening / closing.

Is there any work around that could work?

Im thinking about simply using the laptop with tethered connection from smartphone, since it doesn't have any ethernet ports.

But I'd rather fix the cable honestly.

You can perfectly scavenge a thin wire from old electronics or buy a length from a hardware store if what you broke is a mere wifi data/power cable. Do the cables connect to the antennas? If that is the case, then this quick fix will not work too well since you need special coaxial cables to ensure an interference-free wifi signal. Could you show us some photos of the cable that has been severed?

Either way, the fixes for this issue seem quite straightforward and I believe that with enough patience you will be able to get it to work without it being tethered to a smartphone.

Yes, the cables are soldered on top.. i updated photos to original question..

If there's only needed some standard cable, what should i ask for and where?

I tried sourcing this specific laptop zo be sure its compatible since the cable looks atypical to me

Edit: the cables are approx 30 and 40cm long and very thin

Ah, I fear you have indeed severed a coaxial, which has an outer grounded electromagnetic interference shield layer (which is why that one cable has to be soldered twice, as shown in the image you published).

Coaxials are essentially two concentric wires running inside one cable. The outer layer is a ground cable that absorbs interference and the center one is the signal cable.

I'm afraid there is no "standard cable" for your specific laptop, but you can buy a meter of RG178 coaxial cabling that should serve for your purposes off of Aliexpress. You will need to make four solder joints, two for ground, and two for signal on each end. I have not included a link as that would exceed my character limit for comments.

If you really are in a pinch, you can try splicing the center signal wires to each other but you will need to ensure they do not touch anything else by wrapping them in electrical tape. Either way, you will likely end up with a bad signal due to the fact you no longer have that crucial shielding.

@david56209 could you provide some video link for me please? Im not sure what where to solder..

Also one side of the cable is soldered and the other one is the classic connector for the wifi modul.. is there any more specific type of cable that could help me? I found only either cable (with no ending connector) or connector on both sides.. is it okay to just cut on end off or should i look more for better one?

Also someone recommended to me to use Closable tubing to fix the cables, but the cables in the white cable are not touching (ruptured)

@vicktory A video like this one should serve: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_76Pw-2...

Yours will be smaller, but the idea is the same.

Either way, if you can, it is better to purchase a new set of antennas using jayeff's link to avoid going through that hassle.

If you can't get those specific antennas, you could also potentially just buy a generic set of multiband wifi antennas that use the same connector and place them somewhere else in the laptop, but they may not fit.

I decided to try soldering it myself..

After removing the black and white plastic part of cable, i rolled back the protective layer of metal threads and Right now there is another very durable plastic tube in which the the wifi cables run..

Unfortunately , trying to cut em open requires more strength and the wifi cables got severed by very little amount..

If you have any experience, do you know any tips to remove the last layer of plastic without damaging the wifi cables inside?

I'll upload more photos to the original post
