It says here that one can should do it when you buy a recharge kit from the auto parts store.

The PO should also determine if her vehicle uses R134a or the older much more expensive R12. Ralph
Some of that older stuff needs to be captured and recycled too. Is this really a DIY sort of repair?
Cars after 1993 went to the R134a referigerant. And yes R12 or Freon is was banned by the US in an international treaty for it's link to ozone depletion. I think if they actually make recharge kits, it's a DIY job.
Thanks 040304 for the update. I was not sure when the changeover happened. Ralph
With rear ac.38 oz.
If you need more than 2-14oz cans you probably have a leak. O rings at the hose connections can be replaced for $10 by buying a set. A vaccumn pump must be used if system is di-connected at Harbor Freight for $14.Dye can be added with freon to see a leak. Freon sniffers can also be had for $80. http://www.autoacforum.com/messageview.c... best site for "flushing a system." if you dont wanna replace ALL of the parts

The coolant weight is listed on a sticker under the hood. On mine, it was near the radiator. (1.5 lbs R134a on mine)
Good info if you are starting with an empty system, not so helpful for a partially filled system. Can sizes vary, so the question of numbers of cans is pointless.
Underfilled is better than overfilled. Stop adding when it starts blowing cold if you lack a gauge.
