To answer the second question first---Yes you will need to erase the new drive and reformat it as a Mac drive. Then you would need to install an Mac operating system to use the new drive. You could do this with the drive installed but have your OS disk handy when you do it. Could be as simple as a blown head gasket. I don't think the transmission work had anything to do with it--just old age on the car. Link provided to show you how to change head gasket if you want to try it. Good luck. http://www.wikihow.com/Install-a-Head-Gasket
