This is a guide to help understand and solve the most common issues for the Garmin eTrex 22X.

Unable to Connect to GPS/Satellite

The device displays a "failed to connect" message, and/or the device's navigation is malfunctioning.

Satellite Interference

This usually occurs when you are indoors or under some cover, and that is enough to break the link between your device and the satellite; the easy fix is to walk to an open space and wait a couple of minutes till your device reconnects with the satellite.

Software Glitch

This can happen on any occasion and is the most common problem. The easiest way to fix a malfunction is to restart the device. To restart your device, simply hold the light/power button until the power icon is displayed.

Out-dated Software

Sometimes there are updates required to connect properly to the GPS/Satellite.

How to update a Garmin ETREX 22x

You will need the following:

  • Garmin ETREX 22x
  • Mini-USB cable
  • Computer with Windows 2000 and up or macOS installed
  • microSD card between 4GB-32GB
  •  Go to Garmin’s Update page. (https://www8.garmin.com/support/download...)
  • Under Updates & Downloads click the hyperlink titled “Garmin Express” to install the software required to update the device.

Windows

  1. Click “DOWNLOAD FOR WINDOWS” under Manage and Update Your Garmin Device.
  2. Open the download file and follow the instructions to install the application.
    1. Read over terms and conditions, then select the checkbox.
    2. Click “Install” then “Launch Garmin Express

MacOS

  1. Click “DOWNLOAD FOR MAC” under Manage and Update Your Garmin Device.
  2. Open the download file and follow the instructions to install the application.
  3. Double click “Install Garmin Express
  4. Click Continue
  5. Click Continue again
  6. Click Continue again
  7. Read over terms and conditions and click Continue again
  8. Finally, click “Install
  9. Enter the information requested and click “Install Software
  10. Click “Close
  11. Open Garmin Express and click “Get Started”, then “Add Device”
  12. Connect your device using the Mini-USB cable and the port located under the top rubber flap on the device.
  13. Once the device shows up, select “Add Device”, and fill out the optional information
  14. Once the setup is complete, under Updates Available, select “Install All”.
    1. If nothing is displayed under this heading, your device is up-to-date
  15. Read over and accept the terms and conditions and any other information given. Select “Continue” and follow the instructions displayed.

Device is now updated. If problems persist, consider contacting the manufacturer.

Battery Won’t Hold a Charge

Whenever the device is turned on, the battery life is noticeably shorter.

Dirty charging port

The device could not be turned on because of a dirty charging port. To clean the charging port, you need toothpicks or small tweezers and a can of compressed air. Using either/or gently pull out the lint and dirt collected in the charging port, then blow out any material. Repeat this until you see no more extensive collections of dirt and lint.

Won’t Power On

The device will not power on.

Misplaced Batteries

The most common problem is poorly placed batteries. To solve this issue, you can:

  1. Remove the backplate by lifting and turning the metal tab. Press firmly on both batteries to make sure batteries are firmly locked in
  2. Remove the backplate and remove batteries to make sure they are set with the correct alignment. Use engraving inside the battery compartment to determine the correct placement.

Dirty charging port

The device could not be turned on because of a dirty charging port. To clean the charging port, you need toothpicks or small tweezers and a can of compressed air. Using either picking tool, gently pull out the lint and dirt collected in the charging port, then blow out any material. Repeat this until you see no more extensive collections of dirt and lint.

Malfunctioning Display

When the device is on, there is a discoloration, display glitch, and/or visible damage on the display

Software glitch

Sometimes there are glitches in the device this can manifest in a malfunctioning screen, and the fix is as easy as turning it on and off again. To turn off the device, hold the power/light button down until the screen goes black. Wait 30 seconds. To turn it on, hold the power/light button down until the screen lights up and you can see the word Garmin appear on the screen.

Bogged down by too much data

The best solution is to factory reset the device

How to factory reset the device:

  1. Using the analog stick go to Setup and press the analog stick
    1. Right 1, Down 2
  2.  Go to Reset and click the analog stick
    1. Right 1, Down 2
  3.  Select Reset All Settings using the analog stick
    1. Down 3
  4. Select Yes using the analog stick

Track Manager > Current Track > Archive locks the device: The power-off button is the only one that might work. Does Garmin know what "Archive" means?
