Computer Won’t Boot

The screen won’t turn on after pressing the power button.

CPU Fan/Motherboard Damaged

If a motherboard error message appears when starting the computer, then the exhaust fan or motherboard may be damaged. Some common error messages for an Asus motherboard can be found and diagnosed here. If the motherboard or fan needs to be replaced, remove the front screen before replacing the device. Follow this motherboard or fan replacement guides.

Hard Drive Failure

The operating system of a computer is saved on the hard drive. If the hard drive is malfunctioning, then the operating system cannot be booted. This may cause an error message to appear on screen while the computer starts up. The message may say something along the lines of “Hard disk failure” or “Operating system not found.” In these cases, the hard drive must be replaced. Follow this guide on how to replace the Hard Drive.

Computer Overheated

Computers constantly monitor their internal temperature and will disable themselves if the temperature gets too high. The computer will even prevent itself from powering on if it’s too hot. Wait a few minutes for the system to cool down and turn the computer on again.

If the computer overheats often, then the cooling fan, heat sinks, and/or air vents need to be fixed or upgraded. Dust can collect inside a computer, clogging air vents and preventing the computer from cooling itself. A common fix is to open the computer and remove the dust using a compressed air canister. Dust removal should be done about once every 2 or 3 months to prevent an excessive buildup.

If the computer continues to overheat, then the cooling fan may not be strong enough to remove the excess heat and will need to be replaced or upgraded. Sometimes, the thermal paste between the processor and the heat sink can dry out and will need to be cleaned off and reapplied. The heat sink replacement guide includes instructions on thermal paste application.

USB Won’t Read

The computer does not detect a USB device or does not deliver power to said device.

Old USB Driver

If the computer does not recognize the USB device, the USB driver may need to be updated. To update the software, follow this guide and select your current operating system. Scroll down until you find the current USB driver download.

USB Board Failure

First, make sure that the USB device that you are using is recognized on another device. If the device is recognized on other devices, then you’ll need to replace the USB port board. The board is located underneath the motherboard, so the motherboard must be removed to access the USB board.

Camera Doesn’t Take Photos

The web camera embedded in the top of the screen doesn’t shoot videos or photos. Recorded pictures and video appear blurry or distorted.

Old Webcam Driver

If the built in camera isn’t functioning properly, then an outdated webcam driver could be the problem. Follow this guide to download the new webcam driver.

Webcam Malfunctioning

As the webcam is embedded into the front screen, replacing the camera means replacing the screen along with it.

Computer is Slow

Video playback is choppy and applications run slowly; The device boots up slowly.

Hard Drive is Fragmented

The computer is searching for all relevant data within the hard drive, whether that is running a program or searching for files. If the data for a single file is distributed across multiple memory locations, then the computer will take longer to search for all the data. This is called fragmentation and can be fixed by running a defragmentation (defrag) utility. Defragging a drive groups all the data associated with a file in adjacent memory locations, so the computer can quickly locate all the data it needs for a specific program. First, close all running programs and applications. In the taskbar, search for the “Defragment and Optimize Drives” desktop application and run it. Select the drive labeled “(C:)”, click “Optimize”, and allow the app to run.

Hard Drive is Full

A full hard drive can slow down a computer because there’s less buffer room in memory to move data around. If you have less than 1GB of free storage left on your device, then you should make room in your hard drive by deleting unnecessary files and programs or replacing the drive with one of a larger capacity. Data from the old drive can be transferred to the new drive if needed.

Insufficient RAM

Process are run within the memory space called RAM. If there isn’t enough space in RAM, then programs will run slow. Open the task manager and click on the “Performance” tab. Watch the “Memory” graph and check the memory usage. If the usage exceeds 75% under normal operating conditions, then the RAM needs to be upgraded.

No Wireless Internet Connection

The device has trouble connecting to or doesn’t connect to the internet. The device can't connect to other devices through Bluetooth.

Router and/or Modem Malfunctioning

The router and the modem allow computers to connect to the internet. Routers connect devices on a network with each other while the modem connects the router with the internet. Try troubleshooting the wireless capability of your router and modem by looking up the devices given by your internet service provider.

Outdated WiFi Driver

The WiFi driver may be out of date. Update the “Wireless LAN Driver” by going to the ASUS support page, selecting the correct operating system, and scrolling down to the Wireless driver. Download and install the driver.

WLAN Card Failure

The WLAN card allows the computer to connect to devices wirelessly through WiFi and Bluetooth. If the card itself is damaged then follow this guide here.

No Ethernet (wired) Internet Connection

The device has trouble connecting to or doesn’t connect to the internet while using an Ethernet cable. The device can't connect to other devices through an Ethernet cable.

Router and/or Modem Malfunctioning

The router and the modem allow computers to connect to the internet. Routers connect devices on a network with each other while the modem connects the router with the internet. Try troubleshooting your router and modem by looking up the devices given by your internet service provider.

Outdated LAN Driver

The LAN driver may be out of date. Update the “LAN Driver” by going to the ASUS support page, selecting the correct operating system, and scrolling down to the LAN driver. Download and install the driver.

Defective Ethernet Port

If the Ethernet cable is known to be in good condition, the problem could the Ethernet port itself. you can replace the Ethernet port board by following this guide.

Device Turns Off Suddenly or Crashes

The computer powers on and boots up, but automatically turns off within a few minutes. Computer shuts down while running multiple programs or while running a graphics intensive video game.

Computer Overheating

Computers will turn themselves off if they get too hot. See overheating section above for how to fix overheating.

Insufficient Power/Defective Power Cord

A defective power cord and adapter could cause the computer to turn off intermittently. A damaged wire in the cord can be found if the computer is powered only while the cord is bent a certain way. The loose wire is an electrical and fire hazard and must be replaced.
