Computer powers on but screen does not

When you try to turn the computer on, there are lights and the computer is getting power, but the screen is black and there are no beeps.

Check Screen brightness

First check to see if the brightness on the screen is turned down to the point that it is not visible. Turning this up will allow the screen to be visible. Turn this up using the command fn + f9 until desired brightness.

No Response of Screen

When turning on the computer. If you recognize that the leds on the keyboard and side leds are turning on, but the main screen does not respond.

Check for visual marks

Look at the screen for any marks or dents in the screen. If there are marks or fractions on the screen then chances are that the screen is damaged to the point that it will not turn on. In this case then a screen replacement will need to be done.

No Response of touch pad

If you have no response from the touch pad, using the keyboard commands, navigate through the windows settings to check and see if all device managers are up to date and the keyboard is up to date. If there is no response from the touch pad then it may need to be replaced. A guide that shows how to replace the touch pad can be found here.

Blue Screen of Death

The computer turns on but you face a blue screen that forces reboot.

In order to diagnose this issue, you must be able to see the error code. If the computer restarts immediately and you can’t read the error text, follow these steps to disable the auto-restart option:

  1. Right click on “My PC” or “My Computer.”
  2. Go to Properties.
  3. Go to the Advanced tab.
  4. Under the System Failure section, make sure the “automatically restart” option is unchecked.
  5. Click “OK.”

Operating system needs to go back to a previous version

To perform a system restore, review the process carefully and perform the following:

  1. Save your files and close your programs.
  2. In the Start menu, search for “Create a restore point.”
  3. Click “System Restore.”
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problems began and begin the System Restore.
  5. Restart computer and see if the problem persists

Many problematic programs can prevent Windows from performing a system restore. If you run into problems completing this process, restart your computer in safe mode and try again.

Computer has out of data drivers

To check if drivers are in date:

  1. Click “Start.”
  2. Search for “Device Manager”
  3. Right click on specific driver.
  4. Click “Update.”

If you recently installed or updated recent hardware, right click on the driver and click Disable Driver.

Restart computer and see if the problem persists

Computer needs updates installed

Installing Microsoft update might resolve known bugs with the system.

  1. Click “Start.”
  2. Search for “Check for Updates.”
  3. Click “Install Updates.”
  4. Restart computer and see if the problem persists.

Computer has hard drive issues

To check for hard drive errors:

  1. Open the File Explorer.
  2. Right click on the main drive where windows is installed in (typically C:).
  3. Click “Properties.”
  4. Go to the “Tools” tab.
  5. Under “Error Checking,” click “check.”
  6. Restart computer and see if the problem persists.

Computer has memory issues

To check for memory errors:

  1. Click “Start.”
  2. Search for “Windows Memory Diagnostic.”
  3. Run Diagnostic.
  4. Restart computer and see if the problem persists.

Computer will not charge or stay charged

Computer powers off when computer is unplugged.

Bad Charging Cable

To identify if your charger is working or not, simply plug in your charger and identify the battery icon (bottom right of the monitor). This icon should have what looks like a power plug beside the battery. If you see no such icon then your cable or laptop is not charging. If you have an extra charger, try connecting this cable and see if it will charge. If the other cable works at charging your laptop then the original cable does not work.

Faulty Battery

If once plugged in, the charger is not charging the battery but the computer turns on, then the battery is dead. This means that the battery will hold no charge to keep the computer operational without being plugged into the wall. In this case a battery swap is suggested to fix this problem. Computer runs slowly

The computer takes a long time to run simple tasks.

Computer needs to reboot

If the computer has not been rebooted recently, it may need to be rebooted. If you are running Windows 10, left click on the Windows icon then click the Power button at the far bottom corner of the menu. Select “Restart” from the menu that pops up. Do this before moving on to the next steps.

Programs running in the background

If there are programs running in the background they may be slowing the computer. The easiest way to see what programs are running in the background is to open Task Manager by holding (CTRL + ALT + Delete) and selecting task manager. Click on the unwanted programs and then click “End Task”. Check if the problem persists.

Hard Drive is Full

If the hard drive is full, the computer may be slowed down by it. To check if the hard drive is full open File Explorer and click on My PC. It is a good policy to allow 10% - 15% of free space in the Hard Drive for virtual memory and and temporary files. If the Hard Drive is more full than 90% you may need to change the Hard Drive. Insufficient RAM

It is possible that the amount of RAM(Random Access Memory) is not sufficient. The levels of RAM being used can be found by opening the task manager the Task Manager and selecting the Performance tab. The percentage of RAM that is in use is displayed next to the Memory section. If the percentage of RAM being used is close to 100%, there is not enough memory available and the RAM drive may need to be upgraded. The guide to change the RAM can be found here.

Computer produces Odd or No Sound

The speakers do not produce sound or odd sounds.

Sound distorted or little to no sound

If the laptop is producing distorted or no sound at all, you want to check your settings and confirm that they are correct. Travel to the sound icon on the bottom right of your screen. Click and confirm that the volume is not muted and the volume level is turned up.

Check Sound Playback

  1. Click on the windows key.
  2. Type in “sound” and select sound in the control panel.
  3. Click the “playback” tab.
  4. Confirm the correct Speakers playback device is selected and set as default device.

If device is not set as default, right click on speakers icon in playback and click “set as default”

Test with headphones

Check to see if you can hear the audio that is supposed to be coming out of the laptop via headphones. If the volume is coming out of the headphones but not the laptop speakers, then most likely the speakers for the laptop are broken a repair guide can be found here.
