Trackpad won't Work
The trackpad is not responding to my touch.
Hardware Issue is Causing the Trackpad to Not Work
To test that the trackpad itself is not at fault:
Make sure there is no dust or dirt on the touchpad. If this doesn't work, drumroll your fingers on the touchpad for ten seconds to make sure any potential interferences with connection of the trackpad (like dirt) are gone.
Software Issue is Causing the Trackpad to Not Work
Take the following steps in order until one of them solves the issue:
Touch the Esc key several times. Turn your Chromebook off, then back on again. If these do not work, you might need to perform a hard reset.
Trackpad Works for Some Accounts but Not Others
If you have more than one account on your Chromebook, delete the account that has problems with the touchpad, then re-add the account.
Faulty Trackpad
If there are continual problems with your trackpad that the above steps do not help, your trackpad may be at fault. Follow the Trackpad Replacement Guide to replace your trackpad.
Chromebook Won't Turn On
My chromebook won't turn on even though I charged it overnight.
Computer Needs a Reboot
If the computer will not begin to boot, a hard reset may be needed to get the computer back up and running. A hard reset will not delete any files nor act like a Restore. To do this: Turn the Chromebook off, hold down the Refresh button (circular arrow at top of the keyboard) and the Power button simultaneously for about 5 seconds. Release the buttons and the computer should restart.
Computer Won't Charge
The battery or charger may be the problem. See the below "Chromebook Battery Won't Charge" section to see troubleshooting steps for this issue. If this does not work, continue to the "Hard Drive Issue" subsection.
Battery Won't Charge
When I plug the charger into the Chromebook, it doesn't charge the battery.
The Charger is Broken
If you have access to another Chromebook charger, plug it into your laptop. If your Chromebook charges, then your charger is broken and you must replace it. If your Chromebook still doesn't charge, the battery is most likely the issue. An important note, however, is to be sure to try both chargers from different wall sockets, because the true issue could be with where you're charging it from!
The Chromebook Battery is Bad
If the above steps do not work, your battery may be faulty, and needs to be replaced. Follow the steps in the Battery Replacement Guide.
Hard Drive Issue is Preventing Charging
If your Chromebook still doesn't charge, perform a hard reset. If this doesn't fix it, you may need to replace the hard drive.
Screen is Frozen
Screen is frozen and computer won't respond or turn off.
Running Program is Causing the Freeze
The program that is running on your Chromebook may be causing it to slow down and display a frozen screen. Close the program by force quitting or by pressing the escape button.
Software Issue is Causing the Freeze
If the computer is frozen and will not follow any commands or turn off, you may need to perform a hard reset in order to restore your computer. To do this, simply press and hold the refresh button (circular arrow button at top of the keyboard) and the power button for about 5 seconds, or until the computer begins to reset. If this does not work, unplug your computer from the charger and allow the battery to die. After about three hours, reconnect it to the charger and turn the computer on.
Hardware Issue is Causing the Freeze
If there is anything plugged into your laptop through the charging port, USB, or audio jack, unplug it temporarily, as this may be the cause of your frozen screen. Once your screen goes back to normal, you can plug your hardware back in.
"OS is Missing or Damaged" Error
The screen displays "OS system is damaged or missing."
Battery Issue is Causing Error Message to Appear
If the Chromebook dies after this error occurs, plug into charger and allow the dead battery to fully recharge overnight before attempting to restart.
The Operating System is Not Working Properly
If turning your Chromebook off and on again doesn't work, you may need to recover your Chromebook. Note that recovery permanently erases everything on your Chromebook's hard drive, including your downloaded files, so be sure to back up your files before performing a recover. Follow these steps to recover your Chromebook.
System Errors
My Chromebook is shutting down often
Chromebook is shutting down unexpectedly
If your Chromebook is shutting down frequently your best option is to shut down your Chromebook and let it rest for a few minutes. If that does not work it may be a website or extension that you use frequently that is the issue.
Removing an extension
To remove an extension go into the chrome browser, click on the three-dot icon in the upper right corner, select the more tools in the drop list, select extensions and remove any unwanted extensions that may be causing the issue.
Sound Won’t Work on Chromebook
I can’t hear anything on my Chromebook
Unable to hear sound
Before adjusting the sound it’s important to make sure headphones are disconnected before trying to play any sound through speakers and if the use of an audio device such as an external speaker is connected that it’s working properly. Once you’ve analyzed those details you can continue to find the system clock located in the right bottom corner and adjust the volume slider displayed on the pop-up menu and turn it up high enough to hear.
The sound input and output
If the above steps don’t work you can also change the sound input or output by clicking the system clock located at the bottom corner then click the arrow displayed next to the volume slider on the pop-up menu. This icon won't appear if you do not have external sound devices connected to your Chromebook. It’s important to notice whether the pop-up menu has the correct audio device set as your output and if this doesn’t work you should consider rebooting the Chromebook following the above steps again.
When Applications are Open, Computer Slows Down
While web browsing, my computer slows down tremendously
This may be attributed to the high RAM usage of some apps, like Chrome, and the small RAM availability of the computer. You may need to close other open and active programs using the Task Manager. To do this you will need to press the Search + Esc buttons in order to open the menu. From here, select and close apps by clicking End Process. Close any apps that you are currently not using or that are running in the background that you may not even know that you had running.
Even after closing open apps, the computer still runs slow
If the Task Manager fix does not help resolve the issue, you may need to upgrade the RAM in the laptop which will be a replacement of the factory memory that is in the computer. You will need to consult a computer technician or buy and install a RAM upgrade kit from an online seller for your specific model.

My Acer chromebook 15 wont turn on , the charger is plugged in but the light don’t turn on. I know the charger works cause it charges other chromebooks but not mine . I tried the power and the restart button trick but it doesn’t work

Did you resolve this issue be a use I'm having the same issue right now.. Tried to do a hard reset but bone of the buttons are doing anything. The screen is just black but it was on a charged up a few hours ago. Now when I plug in the charger.. The light won't even turn on to tell me its charging

Could be your charger port too. If the charger is loose in the port it may need to be fixed. Mine did that in my Samsung chrome book. Not good.

When the keyboard and touchpad are not responsive, for who knows how long, try plugging a memory card or drive, or phone, or camera, or whatever, into an appropriate USB port or SDcard slot - mine did some visual grumbles and was back to working immediately. Out of caution, I did do a shutdown and restart as soon as I confirmed I wasn’t losing anything.

I was listening to some jams with a browser open and I walked away. Came back to a black screen that won’t show anything even tho the light on the side shows it’s on and I’ve tried turning up the brightness and restarting but won’t even light up. Also a short fragment of a song is stuck on repeat on my laptop so it just keeps playing that little part over and over. Please help….I thought letting the battery die out and then recharging would work since it worked fairly well last time, but the battery won’t seem to die now! Seriously it’s been hours.

once something kinda like this happened to me, I was watching YouTube and I closed my laptop for a bit. When I came back and opened it up audio started but the screen stayed black. I fixed it by holding the button to turn down the screen brightness for a bit, then turning the screen brightness back up and the video faded back. I'm not sure if this will work for your situation but ihope it does.

I have the same problem. Nothing will work for it to turn off. I’m not sure if it will die, though

My Chromebook says it has a dead battery and I tried plugging it into a new wall socket and making sure the outlets were actually on but it still won't charge. I have a feeling the charger is just broken (specifically the energy converter part because it doesn't warm up anymore) but I checked up and down the charger and there are no cuts or bends and the input and output of the charger and the input of the computer aren't broken. I know it's probably just a broken charger but I want to make sure it might not be something else before I go and spend money on a charger I may not be.
Please take answering to this question as a low priority because there probably isn't anything wrong other than the charger.

I’m not sure if this will work, but sometimes on my old chromebook i got this glitch where the computer was on but the screen was black, i fixed it by holding the screen brightness down button for like 3 seconds, wait like 5-ish seconds. (When the computer is working normally this would make the screen go black) Now after you do this turn the brightness back up.
PS the computer has to be on so make sure it is charged, open it up, and wait like 15 seconds and by then it should be on because they turn on automatically.

I woke up this morning and my Acer chromebook 11 had a black screen. I hold the reset button and the power button for 5 seconds, then I pressed the power button and yay! the light came on. Thank you so much for solving my problem. My chromebook is 13 month old and I would have been furious if it broke just now. You totally saved my day, now I can take care of other business.

I've had Chromebooks for about 6 years. I love them except for that occasional freeae-up-but-won’t-shut-down thing. I knew to drain the power but this is the first time I've seen the refresh/off button solution.
…and it works!

My screen isn't turning on, the light that indicates charging shows that I can charge it, and the blue light that says if the computer is on or not turns on if I hit the power button, but the screen won't turn on. I tried the hard reset about 3 times, and it still didn't work. Does anybody have an idea of something else I could do?
