Laptop will not power on

The laptop will not power on when the power button is pressed.

Faulty Battery

If your battery is not holding a charge or your laptop only powers on when plugged into its power adapter, the battery might be at fault. This can happen when the battery is older and not holding a charge as well as it used to or when there is a manufacturing issue. In order to reset the battery, follow these steps: Unplug AC power adapter. Locate the battery reset pinhole on the bottom of the computer. Insert a small paperclip in the battery reset pinhole. Hold the reset button for 4 seconds. Let the computer sit for 5 minutes with no power. Connect the AC adapter and power on the system. If that doesn’t work, replace the battery with this guide.

Malfunctioning Hard Drive

If your computer is receiving power but not booting up, your hard drive may be malfunctioning. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but most commonly because of improperly shutting down the computer, improper ventilation (or faulty CPU fan) leaving to overheating, or rough handling. Before attempting to replace your hard drive, try getting a Windows DVD that matches your version of Windows or create a bootable USB drive. Boot to your DVD or USB drive. If you are using Windows, first select ‘Repair your computer’ and then to ‘Startup Repair’. If you are using another operating system, search for the proper procedure to boot from disk and repair your hard drive. If the above steps do not work, replace your hard drive using this guide.

Speakers will not produce sound

The audio is distorted or not being emitted.

Loose Speaker Connection

A common cause of distorted or missing audio is a loose speaker connection. This occurs when the laptop is handled roughly or through normal wear and tear. Open the laptop and check to make sure that all wires coming from the speaker are connected properly.

Faulty Speakers

If your speaker connections look fine, but the speakers are not functioning properly, replace your speakers using this guide.

Running slowly or crashing

The laptop frequently crashes or has poor performance.

Worn out RAM

If the performance of your Acer Aspire continually degrades while the device is on, your laptop randomly restarts, or you are unable to install new programs, your RAM may be malfunctioning, or simply not seated correctly. RAM does wear out over a long period of time, and can also become improperly connected. First, reseat your RAM following the guide here. If simply reseating your RAM does not seem to solve the issue, consider replacing it using this guide, as it is likely that the RAM has simply run its course.

Malfunctioning Hard Drive

If you are experiencing frequent freezing, corrupted data, or your laptop is making odd noises, your hard drive may be experiencing difficulty. This can happen with physical trauma to the computer or improperly shutting down. If your computer is behaving strangely but not making strange noises, attempt repairing the hard drive from the startup screen. If the problem persists or the computer is making noises, attempt to backup your data to an external disk or cloud storage and replace the drive immediately following this guide.

Laptop will not connect to internet

The computer will not get a connection to the internet.

Unreliable WiFi Source

A common cause of internet-connectivity related issues is the wireless access point itself, not the computer. Routers are very similar to computers, and occasionally need to be rebooted because they run out of memory or are bogged down with requests. Usually, these issues are remedied with a simple power cycle. If your router is on, try resetting it by unplugging the power cord, leaving it unplugged for at least 10 seconds, and plugging it back in. If this doesn’t work, follow the instructions for your specific router to reset it.

Faulty WiFi Card

If you are confident that your wireless access point is working correctly, the issue with your connection may be with the WiFi card in your laptop, though this is rare. A WiFi card may wear out because of old age or physical damage. A faulty WiFi card means that your computer cannot properly pick up or interpret the wireless signals that it receives. Replace your WiFi card using this guide.

Keyboard keys stick or malfunction

The keys on the keyboard stay depressed or don’t register.

Dirty Keyboard

Over time keyboards can become clogged with dust and other debris. Often, these issues can be resolved by cleaning your keyboard with compressed air. This issue can be exacerbated by keeping the device in a dusty environment or putting the keyboard in the way of falling debris, like crumbs when eating. If after cleaning with compressed air, the keyboard is still malfunctioning, try removing the keycaps and cleaning more thoroughly and checking for any physical damage.

Faulty Key Connections

The sensors that sense key presses can sometimes be faulty. Consider replacing the keyboard component of your laptop.
