Overheating after thermal paste change

As the post title implies, I changed the thermal paste on my mid-2012 15” MacBook Pro, but it’s still overheating. Figures coming from Macs Fan Control (Core temperature, average):

Before: 70c idle, 80-90c active

After: 50c idle, 60-70c active

What really worries me is that watching YouTube in 720p (as it can easily do), shoots the temp to 100c, and even with fans at max blast it still only keeps to 90c ish.

I cleaned all the dust out, and the new paste is Arctic MX-4. What’s going on and why is this happening?

Specs:

Intel Core i7 (4 core, 8 thread, 2.20GHz)

16GB DDR3 1600MHz

500GB SSD, DVD drive replaced with 500GB original hard drive

Intel HD 4000 1.5GB + NVIDIA GeForce GT650M 512Mb graphics

15” non-retina screen

A common fault is putting too much paste on. Just a thin film is needed. All the paste is supposed to do is to fill in the microscopic pits on the top surface of the CPU so not much is needed.

You really need a better tool to figure out whats happening. Remove Macs Fan Control fully and install this instead TG Pro shut the system down and let rest a couple of hours (so its cooled down). Now quickly capture a screen snapshot of the main window making sure you get capture all of the sensors (make sure you get the ones at the bottom (Palm Rest Proximity is the bottom sensor). Now run something that pushes things and then take another snapshot. Post both here for us to see Aggiungere immagini ad una domanda

I've got to initially agree with @aactech here, it's a mobile chip so low power consumption at idle with fresh paste did SOMETHING for you but being as it is a soldered mobile chip with no IHS I would make absolutely sure you haven't put too much paste on there; making it act as a thermal insulator.

I'm fairly sure I didn't put much on, pretty much a tiny little dot and spread it around. Could of made a mistake though and I could redo it if worst case happens. I'll install TG Pro as Dan suggested and then post the results.
