Screen remains dark after change of LCD panel and cable

Hi everyone,

I had a flickering screen on my T440s. Initially, pressing on the flickering part did the trick and I could use it as normal. After a while,the problem got worse and I wanted to exchange the screen.

And then, my odyseey started: The shop I ordered the screen from send me a wrong one with a 40 instead of 30 pins connector. Don’t ask me why, but I forced it a little bit into the LCD cable, and obviously it did not work.

When I then got the screen with the right connector, it still didn’t work. Maybe, I thought, I had ruined the connector cable when I forced it into the wrong panel.

So, and here comes my question: I got a new LCD cable, replaced it, plugged in the new LCD screen…and it is still not working. The computer however works fine when I connect it to an external monitor.

Anyone knows what I might be missing? What else could I have ruined possibly?

I would be happy for every answer and even the slightest guess.

Hi,

What is the motherboard "board number" in your T440s, e.g. T440s ST-1 UMA?

All the info that I can find indicates that a T440s has a 40 pin eDP cable between the motherboard and the motherboard.

On the original screen could you still detect any display when shining a torch at an angle close to the screen indicating that it may be a backlight problem only.

If not or you didn't try, try it now on the new display and check if there is a "display" present when the laptop is on. It will be very faint if it is there so trying this in a darkened room may help.

If there is a display present then you have a backlight problem.

You may have damaged the backlight power supply when you forced the cable into the connector.

Normally power is available for the backlights all the time at the LCD panel and a signal is sent to the panel to either turn it on or turn it off. It is not turned on or off, on the motherboard.

If you have a voltmeter, check the voltage on the eDP pins.

Here's a link to the schematic (go to p.38) which shows where to test.

This may not be the correct circuit as it doesn't match what you're saying but perhaps it may give you some clues.

Hopefully a start.
