Why will my dvd player only play in black and white

What connection type are you using to connect the player to the TV, e.g. AV (yellow, red + white), Component Video (blue, red, green, red + white), SCART or S-Video?

Can you try another cable perhaps or another connection type to see if it is still the same?

Have you checked the colour setting in the DVD player to see that it is not in the negative.
