The ignition key mechanism won't turn off or release key. I have been removing fuse to shut her down... It is stuck in "on." Turning of the steering wheel to relieve locking does not seem to help.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Depending on the year there is a small hole which you stick a paper clip into next to the key hole. Pushing the clip in and turning the lock set toward accessory will allow the whole lock set to be removed.

Then you can push the key out from the back side of the lock.
Some old cars with the key on the steering column would ‘lock’ the key in if the wheels were turn all the way to the left or right, such as when parallel parking. You had to pull the steering wheel real hard in the opposite direction while simultaneously turning the ignition.

Have 88 gmc truck wheels r straight and turn and key will not turn off
Do as Frankie advised you, I had the same problem a few years ago and that did the trick.

My "new" 88 GMC C1500 just started doing this. Will the steering wheel yank work forever or do I need to replace ignition or...?
How do you fix that on 1998 silverado c1500 have to turn wheel Wich is hard all the way to the left to turn over the key and when you do hearing clicks

I've had the same thing happen, I've had luck twisting the key partially int the start position the back to off. the permanent solution is a new ignition cylinder
