Yes you can.
You'll get some performance improvement after SSD replacement as the systems CPU & memory will limit you. You will gain more run time using the laptop in battery mode, than running with a HDD.
Modern SSD's come with auto sensing SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) interfaces. Your systems chip set only supports SATA I (1.5 Gb/s). The SSD will sense this and run at SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) speed.
