Computer Will Not Power On

The laptop does not show any signs of powering up or turning on, and no lights turn on.

Loose Charging Port

The power adapter and cord are plugged in, but the power light is not on. If wiggling the cord turns the light on, the charging port is loose and should be repaired using this guide.

Faulty Power Cord or Adapter

The power adapter and cord are plugged in, but the power light is not on. If wiggling the cord does not turn the light on, the adapter or cord is faulty, and a new cord and adapter should be purchased.

Battery Will Not Charge

The laptop is on, plugged in, the power light is on, and the battery icon shows that it is charging, but the battery is not gaining any charge.

Faulty Battery

The battery is unable to hold charge and should be replaced with a new one using this guide.

Keyboard or Keys Not Responding

Individual keys are stuck or not responding, or the entire keyboard has stopped responding

Key(s) Stuck

There may be something below the key that is preventing it from being pressed. Gently pry the key upward and check to ensure there is nothing under the key, then replace the key.

Faulty Keyboard

If the entire keyboard stops responding, or if a significant number of keys stop responding, see this guide to replace it.

Laptop is Overheating

The laptop begins shutting down without notice while in use, and the bottom, side, or top of the laptop are hot to the touch.

Dust in Vent or Fans

Too much dust in the vents or fans prevents heat from escaping completely. Clean the vents and fans with compressed air carefully, keeping the compressed air at least 1 inch (3 cm) away from the vents. See this guide to access the fan inside the computer.

High Resource Use

Open Windows Task Manager using Ctrl+Alt+Del. Click the drop down arrow labelled “More Details” to see your computer’s current status. If CPU, GPU, or Memory (RAM) usage is too high (70-100%), then restart the computer. Upon restart, open Task Manager again and wait for at least ten minutes to allow the computer time to boot completely. If usage remains too high after restart, consider ending background tasks and checking that unnecessary programs are closed.

No Display

The computer is on, and the power light is on, but the screen remains black with no background light.

Disabled Screen

Check that the screen has not been disabled. Press the Function key and the F2 key at the same time to try enabling the screen. If this does not work, Press the Windows key and the P key at the same time, then press them again. This disables projector mode.

Boot Failure

If re-enabling the screen does not work, it may be a boot failure. Turn the computer off completely, keep it off for 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
