Device Screen Shows Nothing

Screen displays no image, it is completely black.

Device Has No Power

Plug the charging cable into the power source, wait 30 seconds, then try to power on the device. If this does not work, the charging cable or port may be faulty or dirty. If other parts are fine, the laptop may be dead.

Graphics Drivers are Having Problems

Hold down these keys in the following order: Win + Ctrl + Shift + B.

If that does not do anything, restart the device by holding down the power button for 10 seconds, wait 10 seconds, then try to turn the device back on.

If restarting doesn’t work, install new graphics drivers while the device is in safe mode. Ensure that the drivers are properly validated from the HP website.

Malfunctioning RAM

A damaged RAM stick can cause a blank screen even if your computer indicates a successful reboot otherwise. If nothing can be done to restore device images, it might be time to replace the RAM sticks in your device. Use this guide to replace the RAM sticks.

Faulty Motherboard

A faulty motherboard may cause all manner of issues, including a completely black screen. If other troubleshooting options does not solve the issue, the motherboard may need to be replaced. Use this guide to replace the motherboard.

Touchpad Does Not Respond to Touch Input

Cursor does not move when sliding a finger along the trackpad.

Touchpad is Disabled by Software

Using an external mouse, navigate to the “Touchpad” settings within the Windows settings app and ensure that “Touchpad” is set to on.

External USB Mouse is Preventing Touchpad Use

Unplug any USB mice from the USB port.

Touchpad Drivers Have Failed

Restart the device to reinitialize the drivers. If that doesn’t work, install new trackpad drivers.

Touchpad is Broken

If the touchpad is still not responsive, it might be broken. Use this guide to replace the trackpad.

No Audio Coming from Speakers

When trying to listen to an audio file or video, no sound comes out of the speakers.

Volume is Off

Use the keyboard shortcut to toggle the mute switch or click on the audio icon on the Windows taskbar and click the speaker icon to the left of the volume slider.

The volume may also be turned all the way down. Use the volume keyboard shortcut to turn up the volume or click on the audio icon on the Windows taskbar to adjust the volume of the device.

Audio Drivers Have Failed

Restart the device to reinitialize the audio drivers. If that doesn’t work, install new audio drivers.

External Speakers Plugged in

Disconnect any external speakers and make sure the audio output device on Windows is set to the onboard speakers.

Device is Plugged In But Not Charging

Your device is plugged into the correct charging cable, but the battery level is not rising.

Power Port is Blocked

Clear out any dirt or grime that is inside the charging port. This can be done with compressed air, a toothpick, or both.

Power Cable is Not Supplying Power

Ensure that all parts of the cable are properly connected. If the cable appears properly connected and there is still no power, the cable may be dead. If a new cable still doesn't work, use this guide to replace the battery.

Keyboard Appears Unresponsive

Your keyboard does not respond when typing, and some or all of the characters do not appear when you press their key.

Dirt Beneath the Keys

Clean out any dirt or dust under the keys that may be blocking the key actuation. This can be done easily with compressed air.

Keyboard Drivers Have Failed

Restart the device to reinitialize the keyboard drivers. If that doesn’t work, use an external keyboard to navigate the device and install new keyboard drivers.

Solid State Drive Failure

If your device's solid state drive (SSD) has failed, it may cause your device to display an error message or a "blue screen of death" that will not receive input from the keyboard. The SSD may need to be replaced. To replace the SSD, use this guide.
