Dead Pixels on Screen

When the laptop is turned on, the screen shows either one or multiple dark spots or a bright spots on the screen. This can be caused by a number of reasons such as: misalignment, improper cuts, or dust particles on the LCD matrix. The problem has a possibility of not being dead pixels but possibly stuck pixels. Good news is if they are stuck pixels a screen replacement may not be required.

Dust Particles on the LCD Matrix

This problem can be seen as a dark spot that may have different size portions. Basically you have had dust enter you laptop and come to rest on the RGB film layer causing the colors from the pixel or pixels to be blocked.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Gently shake the laptop in hope that the dust will fall out of the way of the pixels.

How to verify they are not stuck pixels

If the pixels are displaying any color other than black or changes color based on the background it known as a “stuck” pixel.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Download a software called Pixelhealer here and run imaging software through the laptop to alternate the color patterns.
  2. Gently massage the pixels with a soft cloth that are not showing appropriate colors. Generally only works with dark pixels due to the lack of electrical contact.

Pixel Misalignment

Misalignment basically means that the computer has had a major shock from being dropped or stepped on, etc. This shock has caused the pixels to move and display light in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, there is no fix for this other than replacing the screen. Click here for screen replacement guide.

Improper Cuts of Components

An improper cut is basically a sub pixel fault or a manufacturing defect caused by the RGB film layer not being cut properly.  This is usually a problem that can be covered by a warranty. If your warranty has expired then a screen replacement is required. Click here for a screen replacement guide.

Laptop Not Turning On

Display on External Device

In most cases the computer is on, but simply displaying on another external device that is off or not in use. Your laptop could be displaying on a monitor, projector, or television, which can stop the laptop from booting into windows.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Remove any connections to external displays that may be interfering with the laptop’s start up.
  2. Restart laptop if display does not appear right away.

External Devices Plugged into USB Drives

Quite frequently, the culprit is a storage card or USB drive still plugged into your laptop when you are trying to start it up. The laptop will try to boot up through the external storage rather than the internal hard drive which can stop the hard drive from booting up properly.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Remove any external storage cards, USB drives, and discs from the laptop.
  2. If the problem persists, restart the laptop with these devices removed.

Defective Hard Drive
