Base Station Does Not Turn On

The base station does not turn on when you press the power button

Check the Power Supply

Check to see that the power supply is securely connected to both the device and to the power outlet. Try the power button again. If this does not work, you may have to replace the power supply.

To replace the power supply or the battery, see replacing the battery.

Base Station is Sending a Poor Signal or No Signal

Devices accessing the internet through the Base Station have a difficult time maintaining connection

Check the placement of the Base Station

The surrounding environment can greatly affect the range of the Base Station. Place the base station away from metallic surfaces, entertainment centers, walls, and large pieces of furniture. Try to place the AirPort Extreme at least 25 feet (7.6 meters) from a microwave oven, cordless phones, or other sources of interference. The base station can be positioned on a wall or ceiling, and need not be level.

Add Additional Base Stations

You may need a base station in multiple rooms to cover a large house or office.

Replace the Antenna

If you are still receiving a weak signal, your antenna may need to be replaced.

To replace the antenna, see replacing the antenna.

Replace Wi-Fi Card

If replacing the antenna does not give a good signal, you may have a bad Wi-Fi internet card and need to replace it.

To replace the Wi-Fi Card, see replacing the Wi-Fi card.

Base Station Status Light is Flashing Amber

This means that the Airport is unable to receive an internet signal

Check the Ethernet Cable

The problem could be that the ethernet cable is not connecting to the Airport. Unplug the ethernet cable and then plug it back into the Airport. Make sure that it is plugged in fully and that you are plugging the cord in with the correct side facing up.

Check the Modem

The problem could be that your modem is not giving off internet signal. Turn off the modem by unplugging it. Wait about five seconds and then plug the modem back in.

The Light is Still Flashing

If the light is still flashing then the problem connecting to the internet is still occurring. This could mean that there is a problem with your internet provider. Contact them to try to fix this problem.

Lost Password or Cannot Log On

You forgot your password and cannot log onto the network.

Reset the Router

Resetting the router will let you create a new password so that you can reconnect to the internet. Using a straightened paper clip, press and hold the reset button on the back of the base station for one second (Note: If you hold the reset button for more than one second you may erase your network settings). On your computer select the AirPort network and open the AirPort Utility. In the toolbar, click on AirPort and then Base Station. Select your base station and click manual setup. In the manual setup menu you will be able to enter a new password. Click on wireless and choose the security encryption method you would like to use for your wireless network. Enter your new password. Click update in order to restart the base station and load the new settings.

Base Station is on but Not Responding

You try to make make a connection but cannot find the AirPort Extreme.

Check the Power Supply

Check to see that the power supply is securely connected to both the device and to the power outlet, and then try the power button again.

Reset the Router

Using a straightened paper clip, press and hold the reset button on the back of the base station for one second (Note: If you hold the reset button for more than one second you may erase your network settings.)

Reset the Base Station to Factory Settings

Use a straightened paperclip to press and hold the reset button for about 5 seconds until the status light flashes quickly. Your AirPort will be reset with the following settings:

  1. The AirPort will receive its IP address using DHCP.
  2. The network name will be Apple Network XXXXXX where the XXXXXX is replaced by the last six digits of the AirPort ID.
  3. The base station password will be "public"

Replace the Logic Board

If the base station does not respond after trying the above solutions, you may have a damaged logic board and need to replace it.

To replace the logic board, see replacing the logic board.

I don't know why the instructions mention "try the power button" as the AirPort Extreme does NOT have a power button.

How does one reset the MAC Card ID to match the MAC CARd of a laptop connected into the Airport Extreme? Do later versions of routers do this automatically?

If the reset button does not work, the switch that it presses on may have been damaged or have come detached from the logic board.

If you remove the bottom pad and plastic bottom of the case, following instructions elsewhere on iFixit, you can either just remove the switch (if it is still attached!) and bridge the two pads that it connected or the required amount of time, using that paper clip bent to fit (or similar). The two pads nearest the edge of the board seem to be used only to mechanically attach the switch to the board; the two pads set back from the edge and originally soldered to the contacts on the back of the switch are the ones that need to be bridged to reset the unit.

Alternatively, you could remove the logic board and re-solder (and if necessary, replace) the surface-mount switch .

It’s easier just to bridge the pads , and if you remember the password you won’t shouldn’t ever need to use the reset button again.
