I bought a Danco shower kit with the valves and handles.

The one I took out had no branding. The Danco on fits but it is about a quarter inch too long.

Is there anyway to know if a different kit has shorter valve stem?

As you can see the trim plate sits off the wall about a 1\4 inch

Try and see if they sell one that is shorter at the place that you buy it from.
