Hi @dianapruett .

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone’s operating design and could damage the components.

Rice is good to eat but does nothing to fix the problems caused by corrosion

Don't Put Your Device in Rice. Here's Why...

First do not turn on your phone and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you do have to use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA

Here is a link that describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit Nokia Lumia 1020 guide(s) which may be of some help.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional mobile phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Can I use 99% Isoproyl or 91%

Hi @dianapruett ,

99% is best to use but 91% is also very good.

I just state 90%+ so hopefully people will know that it is the best minimum % requirement of Isopropyl Alcohol to use for the most effective results

Okay. If that doesn't work, should I get replace the logic board or screen?

Hi @dianapruett ,

Don't forget to unplug the screen cable and clean the ends and also the connector contacts on the motherboard.

After that try a screen first.

The difficult part can be to determine which part is actually failing because of the water. It could be something to do with the graphics from the main logic board but is likely to be just the LCD if it is just a few lines.

If it was pretty recent still there could be moisture still inside that is creating the glitch as well. So might be able to try putting the phone in the rice for a couple more days and restart it after to see if it helped any more.

So would I have to change the logic board?

Well you mean that the phone works normally (except for the screen). You can try to put your phone under hair dryer and then into a bag full of uncooked rice in the back of your refrigerator with the phone shut down (all the night)
