Having just repaired this on my friends Xbox 360, I followed the guide for RROD repair (as it had that first and then had e74). I found a picture of the HANA chip on Google with a hint to apply pressure on it when the Xbox is warming up. It took no time at all, and presto—we have working machine! I don't know how long it will stay working, but for now, it's fine.

Tried this, no go. My xbox actually started flashing 2 red lights after this :-(

Overheating is what's causing that, get a new fan for the thing!

The problem with e-74 is very similar to the RROD. Instead of the solder joints being messed up in the GPU or CPU, it's the solder joints on the HANA chip—the small black chip behind the GPU (closer to the fans). To fix this you can try to reflow the solder by heating the chip up to roughly 217 C for 20-30 seconds (best done with a thermocouple type thermometer to monitor the actual temp of the board) then letting the board sit for 30 minutes to completely cool down. When you reassemble the Xbox, apply fresh thermal paste to the GPU and CPU. I would not worry about doing the X-clamp fix, since your problem is not with the GPU or the CPU. I hope this helps.

Good Luck,

Cody

thanks-really helpful answer, except for the part about how to heat the chip... could you give me a bit more info please?

e74 specifically being the HANA chip is bs, I have fixed a bunch of E74 consoles just be re-flowing CPU and GPU. HANA chip is more for no display.

The procedure is pretty much the same as fixing the RROD, you should look at my post from Here. iFixit also has this guide, and this kit for sale.

to get a good reflow its best to heat the bottom of the board which can done with something as simple as a griddle(look on youtube youll see what i mean) and after the top of the board gets to like 100ish degrees c apply heat to the hana chip with a heat gun or something similar till the board gets to 217ish degrees c this will melt the solder and reflow it. there are videos on youtube if you just search xbox 360 reflow or something like that. Hope this helps.

Good Luck,

Cody

P.S. get board temps with a thermocouple type thermometer

da

Never use this kit!!! It will just jam the chips into the board which works temporarily and then breaks worse. You will get warped motherboards from this, not to mention overheating or shorting if the screws are not tightened the same! The x-clamps exist for a reason!!!

Want to fix? Reflow/Reball/Replace the affected chip.

I would just like to highlight three useful information about fixing Xbox 360.

#1 tip to avoid Xbox red ring of death is to prevent Xbox overheating.

#2 never try to re-solder Xbox your own unless you are knowledgeable at it or you have a repair guide with you.

#3 Don't wrap the damaged Xbox 360 console with a bath towel, it will not do good to your Xbox.

For a detailed instruction about fixing Xbox 360 problems, you can look at this resource www.e74online.com just sharing to also contribute helpful information to Xbox lovers like me. This helped me fix my Xbox 360 so it may also help you.

Why wouldn't a few seconds of a heat gun on a medium setting at each set of chip pin's be enough to re-flow the solder? Solder melts fairly quickly under a heat gun.

I recently fixed a problem with a video card in my 2007 Mac Pro by setting my oven to 400 degrees and letting the card sit in the oven for like 6 or 7 minutes. Worked like a charm!

Could damage the motherboard, go to Microsoft about that.

Incorrect. The heat from a heat gun set properly will NOT damage the motherboard. They literally flow liquid solder on those boards during production to solder the pins in the first place ... and that is a LOT of heat!

Stick to unfolded paper clips in the fans of the 360 to stop the air flow it may seem like you will mess up your console but in reality you will reflow the solder and fix it! When you boot up your xbox with the paper clips in it you will wait about ten minutes or until the single red ring turns into to red rings. Once that has happened you have to unplug everything wait like two minutes, while your over heating it ,if your watching it, the graphics may get scrambled don't worry that is perfectly normal ( it is a sign of progress actually). After it overheats unplug everything from the back including the av cable, the power cable, and the paper clips. ( don't even bother to hit the power button before unplugging it). After that you will wait the two minutes and plug in everything again (excluding paper clips) and power it up you will notice that it works now.

Andrew Mattera, this is not a good fix. It is similar to any other willful overheating and may work for a short time. The risk that one runs is to destroy the logic board and other components through overheating. If you want it fixed, do it right.
