Why is it having trouble moving in reverse?

My car has trouble moving in reverse. Whenever I have to back up, it seems like the gears are just not engaging fully or something like that. It's an automatic transmission. It's gotten so bad that when I park my car, I have to make sure that I don't have to reverse up a hill to get out. I almost have to push the gas pedal down all the way to back up even a small incline. Any ideas as too what might be causing this?

Sounds like a dying transmission to me, but I'm not an expert.

da

Do you have the same problem in forward, such as the car taking a long time to engage gears? Your clutch could be slipping.

da

I don't gave the same issue in forward.

da

i have a 1991 model of Nissan Maxima...it doesn't revers so i changed the new old gear to a new one hoping that it gonna work...but the problem persisted...what am i suppose to do??

da

your transmission is slipping, this happened to me so I know from experience. its just a matter of time

Two things can be wrong, either your transmission has bad transmission fluid in it or has none, and that will tear up your gears and the second is rebuilding your transmission. This is cheaper than a whole new one and you only repair the injured parts. If you are not the only owner then some one else could of done something bad in reverse that screwed this up. One possibilty is that the mechanic tightened your brakes to much as well but it sounds like the transmisson. Take it in to a specialist and have it done.

I have a 98 Honda accord It dose not wont to go in R to back i have to push it and sometime it dose not wont to go in D3 or D4

da

if this is the problem, then the car wont go forward also. but the thing here is, the gear shifting and car movements are okay when in D. the problem only arises when shifted to R.

My 2002 Accord EX-V6 does the same thing. BUT-- I have found a fix. If I move it to Drive for a moment, then back to Reverse, it goes OK. It has been doing this for a few months now (147K miles).

I had my mechanic check the fluid and replace it. He said it was burnt a little, and replaced it, but there was no change in this occasional (30% of the time) problem.

Update

From another posting:

2002 Accord LXi CF8 2.3 auto - reverse problem

Yes we did resolve the problem in the end. The guys that originally rebuilt the transmission ended up pulling it apart again. They found that there was a hairline crack on the main shaft where it joined with the clutch pack that contains the reverse gear. The crack would open up when the trans oil was hot (and thinner), so when reverse was selected, it would also engage the forward drive gear at the same time (^ due to pressure bleed). So when forward and reverse are selected at the same time the transmission binds and the car ends up going nowhere fast. The more revs you give it the worse it gets.

They replaced the main shaft and now the problem is gone.

I have the same problem with 1997 Honda Civic HX CVT transmission. What I've found the issue was that the pivot end of the shift cable (this is located at the top of the transmission housing on this car) was seized, thereby limiting the movement to some extent. Yes moving the gear shifter was hard at this condition. This resulted to mis matched positioning of the intended gear selection and the equivalent valve position for transmission fluid control. Simply fixing the seized cable and re adjusting the shift cable itself solved my problem. Hope this helps to folks with similar issue.

I am sure this is what is happening to my '04 chevey cavalier! I recently had to replace master and slave cylinder (groan) and I am sure the likage is simply out of place (some how). It seemed pretty straight forward (pun intended), but I am ignorant to the proper movement of the cables. It is the darndest thing though, because all gears shift with fluidity but when in reverse, the car moves forward!

Hi

Honda 97 civic automatic. P4 - P1 100% transmission fluid is good. The other day I accelerated putting my foot flat on the petrol. After that me neutral is off center. When I shift it up to neutral I have to shift it little bit past neutral like 3-4mm then it takes and when I shift to reverse after about 4-5 secs it kicks hard into reverse.

Any Ideas

Thanks

ATF.HONDA ATF ........looks kind of pink fluid make sure is genuine from honda u get this from an auto parts store .i have done this and my transmission fils like i just got my car from the dealler now this does not mean that urs might not be damage from inside deu to an internal plastic trans oil filter mine carries into it thats why i fluch out 5 times ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) in order to eliminate the most of clutch material off the transmissioni also install an extra radiator for cooler of the ATF .befor e throwing away solenoids must check for clutch material on conducts and clean up in case thad u dont want to spend money on new solenoids (make sure solenoid works 100% ) clean up use break cleaner spray

Thanks for this info - its an actual solution and clear information. worked to get mine running nice again! I'd have never thought the fluid being from Honda would make a difference.

da

I did the flush out within a year . 5 times .it takes some time to clean a little the trans each time you replace ATF .this is in case that the trans fluid is black like dirty water until u get it to the pink original genuine color

da

BYBA trans carries an internal ATF filter .that needs to take the whole trans apart in order to get a replacement

da

Solonoids needs to be cleaned or completely new .do this when ATF is genuine and u have flush out several times .solenoid spits fluid at a certain pressure to the gear function .each time needs so .this are 6 solenoids .there is also for 2nd and 3rd gear two trans oil pressure switch this might cause gears issius too needs replasement

To everyone who has posted an additional question to this thread: READ THRU THE ANSWERS PROVIDED!! If your car wont go into reverse - it's likely the shift cable needing adjustment. If your vehicle goes into reverse but then wont move - its likely the reverse fork or the main shaft has a crack engaging forward and reverse. and if your vehicle seems to not shift at the right time or shifts very hard - it may be the fluid is low or needs replacing or you need a new clutch. SO: if you see that one of these is your problem and the solution provided seems understandable, then perform the action. If you see your problem but dont understand the solution - pay a mechanic for diagnosis and repair. If you dont see your issue AND ALSO you dont know how to work on a transmission - go to a mechanic. Sometimes you understand the solution and sometimes you don't. If none of the above makes sense, or you dont know where the transmission is located - you MUST go to a mechanic, so why even bother posing a question? All the solutions for every question posted is in the thread, but you have to read the other answers and then apply the knowledge gained. If you are unable to do that, just go to a mechanic.

Re; the ford focus purchaser: fins out how much the replacement tranny and installation is and then buy the car for $200 if you can have the repair done. That said, I drove an acura 90k without reverse gear - just requires thoughtful parking and space to go around a car in front of you.

I somewhat have the same issue my 98 ford f150 won't go into park,it only drives on either 2nd or 1st gear and to back up I have to put it in netural

da

@david72 This is defiantly a linkage problem .if you have a column shifter then the problem can be on the side of the transmission there is a linkage that could possibly be bent . A romp through heavy brush or undergrowth can cause this . If its a floor shifter in a console then there is adjustment at the top end of the cable

da

My pathfinder goes in reverse very smoothly, it's just that when I put in drive it hesitates I sec and it will like roll backa little and engage smoothly. I don't want to buy trouble but is that normal. Like TOO smooth.

I'm looking into buying a Ford escort. I think the year of it is between 1997-2000. You know The year when they were kinda rounded and egg shaped because it's a four door car! It is a one owner car and has 49,000 original miles on it. My sister's friend got evicted and it was his deceased mother's car and he will sell it to me for $200 but reverse is out and its an automatic. Will I have to get a rebuilt tranny or could that be fixed and how much would it cost? He is willing to take payments too, So should i do it or not?? Thank you, Cindy

I'm looking to buy a 84 bronco 2 2.8l and a guy showed me what it was doing and so he pulls it down in R for reverse and he tapped the gas to back up but he done it like it was a manual but it's an automatic trans. Rest of Gears are working fine. But what could it be? Either the filter needs changed or does it need a new transmission? Thanks

Same problem here. I had the transmission rebuilt $3500 later and it still was not going in reverse if I parked on any sort of incline. If I shifted to park again and then reverse it would go slightly if I revved the engine and then would have to repeat all above again to get completely out of parking space. Took it back to tranny guy under warranty who took the tranny out and he said tranny was fine..it was a wheel bearing and charged 175.00 . Still have my doubts after reading all above but will let you all know when I pick up car and sink more into this junker. 1999 Accura CL 170000 miles .

Well we picked the car up today. Paid the 180.00 for the wheel bearing. It backed up fine in the parking lot when we left. Took it home and drove it for awhile and same problem again, no reverse. So back again to the shop tomorrow.
