Hard drives need to be formatted before system is installed. Use Disk Utilities to do this. It might also help to know which machine you are trying to install into. Also What external source you are booting from to access the new drive. Please give us the last four figures of your serial number.

Did you put a copy of your system on the new drive? Your computer will not boot without an operating system.
