How is the HDD connected to the mainboard?
Is there a right angle adaptor that connects the HD to the sata on the mainboard?

Yes, it's a custom part.
When you take the HD out you'll have the adapter block still connected to the drive. You'll then need to take it off the drive to then put onto the new drive (HD or SSD).
