Hello!
My MBP has only two-finger scrolling, and I understand the newer trackpads have additional hardware to support multiPod Touch. Would it be possible to swap my trackpad with the new unibody one to enable multiPod Touch?
I was looking at this part in particular:

This is what you need to do. I've tested this on a 17" and verified it working, it was a personal project of mine when multiPod Touch came out. you need a top case from the 2008 "Penryn" MacBook Pro, preferably with a keyboard on it already. if no keyboard, you'll have to swap yours onto it. on the bottom of the top case there's a cable that connects to the logic board, this is how the computer communicates with the top case, trackpad, keyboard, and temp sensors. you're going to have to swap this cable and temp sensor with the one from your current top case. once you have the new top case with the old cable and old temp sensor, you can install it on your pre-multiPod Touch MacBook Pro. There is zero configuration once you boot up; since the trackpad is a USB device, it works immediately. in response to what Markus said about 4-finger swiping, the Penryns got that feature once Snow Leopard came out, so if you're on 10.6 or newer you're good to go.
feel free to PM me about this, I had a lot of fun figuring this out since apparently I was the first to do it 100% successfully (I couldn't find any supporting info on the interwebs about it).

you won't be able to use that trackpad
i know that some mbp users with their early 08 models and 10.5.6 had modified the "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBMultiPod Touch.kext/Contents/Info.plist"
with that:
<key>TrackpadFourFingerGestures</key>
<true/>
<key>TrackpadSecondaryClickCorners</key>
<true/>
that way they were able to use the 4 finger swipe, i know that there are many hackintoshes with multiPod Touch gestures out there - but i don't know if there is a chance to get those things done on an a1211

This is some very useful information. I've also got a MBP Santa Rosa i bought in late 2007 and it only has 2 finger scrolling. I'm looking at upgrading the top case into a penryn style, and hopefully i'll have some luck with finding some parts and swapping it out. Just out of curiosity, do you guys have any videos posted on youtube or your personal sites that shows this mod upgrade in full effect? many thanks again guys! Harris

No video, and I no longer have that MacBook pro either, but it's really this simple. If a USB mouse has certain features, those features follow the mouse no matter what computer it's plugged into. Same goes for the top case; mounting wise and shape wise they're physically identical, and the multi touch chip is built into the part of the top case that is the trackpad controller. Since they're USB devices using the same connector, it had no choice but to work. The part i was pleased about was OS X recognizing the change automatically, no configuration required. I'm very pleased that my research is getting out there, multi touch is awesome and the santa Rosa is a great machine.
I did the swap and the computer says that there is no keyboard installed. I've taken it apart twice to check connections and I have swapped over the cable that attaches to the logic board, any suggestions?

The kext workaround won't work in my situation since I'm on a Santa Rosa MBP; I think Penyrn top-case swap would be the way to go. I'll check it out!

Kevin, your suggestion worked great!! I got a Penyrn topcase off eBay and did the cable swap like you suggested; worked like a charm. FWIW, my fn keys are all different even though I swapped in my old keyboard; it's interesting that's programmed into the topcase! Many thanks again. --Krishna

You're welcome Krishna, and I was aware of the fn button situation. There are various places you can get the F1-F12 key caps online, or if you can find a water damaged Penryn obviously the plastic keys will be OK. Glad my research was able to help you!
