Replacing the ssd drive

I want to replace the ssd in my 13" Macbook Pro Retina and was wondering if the connection on the stock drive is just msata, or is it proprietary? I was thinking that the connection looked a lot like this:

I found my own answer. Apple has indeed modified the msata connector, so I can't use a standard product.

These sound like the type of choices that take a company from extremely successful and loved to despised and eventually in trouble. Short term money in exchange for destruction of the company's long term success. I really hope Apple doesn't go down the wrong path again when it's positioned so well to have a chance of moving into mainstream and displacing the big guys. The other designs they are adopting in the iMacs and macbook's seems to also be moving in the same direction.

It's Apples own proprietary connection. You will only be able to purchase OWC and Apples products right now.

Also, it isn't an SSD in the MBPr, it's flash storage. They are predominately the same thing except that Apple doesn't use an enclosed case for their storage and it's proprietary connection.

I get what you're saying but it is indeed an ssd (solid state disk), meaning no moving parts.

I appreciate your response. Very helpful.

Apple invented, proprietary bullshit. No, you can't buy an SSD on newegg and slap it in. This, and the fact that the RAM IS SOLDERED IN... is why I can't stand Apple. They segregate themselves and frustrate all but the loyal, simple computer users. I love their design philosophy and butter-smooth software and user experience, I truly do... but the aforementioned issues are just too much.

Get the OWC drive, they have been making Apple-compatible high-quality parts for a very, very long time

:edit: though tbh I didn't realize at the time that there was this new, mSATA style SSD? I clicked on the above link, that would be interesting to see. I did read somewhere that Apple has no firmware limitations, so that crucial mSATA drive should, in theory, work!

:edit #2: of course the actual shape apple used is mSATA... but they had to take it a step further and modify the pinouts. Here is the picture of a normal mSATA pinout, the product you referred to earlier butlera. HERE is Apple's pinout on their Macbook Pro 13 Retina SSD.

YAY APPLE! Thanks for purposefully going out of your way to ensure a more expensive upgrade path, securing yourselves as supreme duechebags of the engineering world.

I understand the other options that are available, but you may notice that the mSATA drives are far less costly than OWC or Apple solutions. SO what I really need to know is the question I asked; is it an Apple invented connection, or is it mSATA?
