Xbox Controller Screwdriver: Torx or Torx Security?

A Torx Security screwdriver is essential to opening your Xbox controller. The tip of the Torx Security (iFixit refers to it as a TR#) screw head has a small hole in the center which differs from a standard Torx screw head (iFixit refers to it as a T#). Torx Security screwdrivers can fit standard and security Torx screws. If you’re in a pinch, you can bypass these security screws with nothing but a small flathead screwdriver.

The number and location of these screws vary for each model, especially for the Elite Series 2, so follow the correct Xbox Controller guide for your model to find the exact location of the screws. Depending on the age and condition of your bit, a Torx T9 or TR9 screwdriver may fit better.

Follow iFixit's screwdriver best practices to ensure an optimal fit when removing screws. In general, use the largest driver size that fits snugly into the screw to avoid stripping the screw.

You’ll also want to use a T6 Torx or TR6 Torx Security screwdriver to remove the standard Torx screws if you are replacing or modding other internal components like the motherboard or LED.

Not every component in every controller will require a TR6 screwdriver, so check the appropriate repair guide for your controller.

A specialized opening tool can release the strong plastic clips that secure the Xbox Series controller’s outside cover. Significant force is required to release them. Take your time to avoid damaging your controller.

Precision tweezers are useful when handling small parts inside the controller. Use these to cleanly remove the battery compartment sticker that hides a security screw without using your fingers or puncturing a hole in the sticker.
