Had an iPad 5th gen do the same thing. Wouldnt charge while powered on, but it would when it was powered off. Also when it was plugged into a windows computer I'd get a message that the USB device was not recognized. So I changed out the charger port and it charges fine now.
I know this is an old post, but if you opened up the console and removed the disc drive, be sure to plug the flex cable in the same way it was removed. You can swap the cable around and it will fit, however you'll get the blinking red light when you try and turn it on.
No glue. You just need to release the clips. Update (04/13/2015): There are small indentions on the sides of the back. You can't see them. They are on the inside. You will need like a phone pry tool to lift it. Once you have a small corner lifted you can run your tool along the sides and it will pop the clips free.
Same issue here. Phone came in dead. Put in a new battery and it charges fine. However if you let the battery die it will no longer charge. Tried several known good batteries and charger ports. I read that there is a component called the U2 IC. It is a 36 pin chip. When this fails you will get the symptoms we are experiencing. Looks like a pretty advanced repair. Hoping someone else has run across an easier solution.
