This can be a display issue or a hardware issue. You can tell by connecting the device to a HDMI supported display.

What is the full model number of the laptop as shown on the product information label on the bottom of the laptop?
Try connecting an external monitor (TV) to the laptop's HDMI port and check if after the laptop has turned on etc with no display, that there's a display showing on it when you press the display function button on the laptop to change the video output away from the laptop screen to the external monitor.
