Screen flickering, half blacking out

I am trying to fix an issue with an ASUS FX505D gaming laptop. It is running Windows 11. So far, we have opened it up and dusted, updated drivers, rolled back drivers, installed drivers through Adrenalin, disconnected and reconnected the display cable, and rebooted countless times. One thing that helped was setting the GameVisual preset to Racing through Armoury Crate, though there was intense flickering and a transparent afterimage on the bottom half of the screen. In some cases, a completely white window would improve the picture. In most cases, the issue appeared slightly better at a refresh rate of 48hz as opposed to 120hz. Currently, the bottom half of the screen is black, with an approx. 1-inch bar of the same line of repeating pixels between it and the functioning top half of the screen. Is this an issue with a connector, a driver, or the screen itself?

@bayleeh start off by connecting an external monitor. If that shows the same issues then you will know that this is most likely an issue with you GPU. If that shows normal then the issue will be with whether your display or the display connector/circuitry. Let's narrow it down first.

Update (02/05/24)

@bayleeh that would pretty much exclude anything you have done on your computer in regard to software and settings. Now back to your actual monitor. Time to open the bottom cover on your computer and let us see what you see. Let's check what this looks like on your display adapter and motherboard. Aggiungere immagini ad una domanda

Thank you, forgot to add that, yes, it works just fine with an external monitor.

I have the exact same problem - 1/2 black screen, then horizontal lines - right now I have a full screen again with about an inch of flickering horizontal screen lines). I ran your answer through AI (Grok) and this is what came up. I'm curious if you were able to resolve your problem. My laptop warranty (both with Asus and with Costco) is done. Given the symptoms you've described, this is what I got back:

Hardware Issues:

  • Screen (LCD Panel):
    • Symptoms: The black bottom half of the screen with a repeating line of pixels suggests a possible failure in the LCD panel itself. This could be due to physical damage, manufacturing defects, or wear over time. (The laptop was purchased in spring 2022 - 3 1/2 years does not seem old to me esp when this was a considerable expense at $1600 Canadian at Costco)
    • Evidence: The fact that adjusting settings like GameVisual or refresh rate slightly alters the display issue but doesn't resolve it points towards hardware rather than software.
  • Display Cable:
    • Symptoms: Since you've disconnected and reconnected the display cable, if the issue persists, it might indicate that the cable might be damaged or not making proper contact anymore. (This I have not tried so I will if I can find a "how to do" on this site)
    • Evidence: Although you've tried reconnecting, the persistent nature of the problem suggests the cable might be faulty or that the connection might not be stable.

Software/Driver Issues:

  • Drivers:
    • Symptoms: If this were purely a driver issue, you would typically see inconsistent behaviour across different applications or after system restarts. Here, the problem seems consistent, which leans away from drivers. (hmm and i have done this, no success)
    • Evidence: You've updated, rolled back, and used different methods to install drivers without resolution, suggesting software isn't the primary culprit.
  • Windows Settings/Compatibility:
    • Symptoms: The temporary improvement with certain settings like GameVisual or refresh rates could hint at a compatibility issue, but the presence of physical symptoms (black screen, repeating pixels) overrides this as the main cause.

Conclusion:

  • Most Likely:
    • LCD Panel: The consistent visual artifacts (black screen with repeating pixels) strongly suggest a hardware failure within the screen itself. The temporary improvements from settings changes could be coincidental or related to how different parts of the screen are being utilized under different configurations. (Is this only something a pro can do? I ran the diagnosis on MyAsus but states all is good)
  • Possible but Less Likely:
    • Display Cable: If not already checked thoroughly, ensure the cable isn't damaged or incorrectly seated. However, if you've done this multiple times without success, the likelihood decreases. (and this I need to figure out how to do)
  • Least Likely:
    • Driver/Software: Given the nature of the symptoms, this seems the least probable cause unless there's a very specific and rare compatibility issue with the hardware and software interaction. (darn it all).

Recommendations:

  1. Try Another Known-Good Display: If possible, connect an external monitor to check if the issue persists. If it does, it's more likely hardware-related within the laptop itself. ( In my case the external monitor works great, so it seems to be hardware related.)
  2. Professional Inspection: Given the complexity, having a professional look at the laptop might be beneficial. They can better assess if the display panel or cable needs replacement. (Ugh, so I guess I will take this the computer repair shop near my home in Vancouver, BC. )
  3. Warranty/Service: Check if your laptop is still under warranty or if there's an extended warranty/service plan that might cover this repair or replacement. (No, out of luck on this one)
