Keyboard and mouse pad not responding.

I had bought a refurbished Lenovo Laptop T430s. I have been using it for a year now and all seems fine until about a month ago the inbuilt mouse pad stopped responding. Then just recently some of the keyboard button stopped responding when I try to type. I don't know if those things mentioned needs replacement or do I just have to update their drivers.

Hi @koitz675

Check the status of the keyboard and the mouse (touchpad) in Device Manager to see if the OS regards them as being installed correctly, at least software wise.

Keyboard drivers are usually provided by the OS and not the device manufacturer so given that only a few keys are not responding (are they in a row either horizontally across the keyboard or vertical down it or just a random bunch?) more likely it is a faulty keyboard. It is generally considered easier to replace the keyboard than trying to fix it.

You could try updating the touchpad drivers and check if that fixed it or not although if it installed OK as per Device Manager, it may be more of a hardware problem with the touchpad.

Have you checked that the touchpad hasn't been disabled? Go to Control Panel → Hardware and Sound ➙ Mouse and ensure that the check box to Enable TouchPad is selected.

Here is the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop.

Go to p.80 to view the procedure to remove/replace the keyboard (check its cable connection to the motherboard just in case it is a loose connection that is the problem with the keyboard and not the keyboard itself).

Here's a link to the parts for the laptop. Click on Select Commodity → Keyboards Internal (189) to find the part numbers for all the keyboards that are compatible with the laptop. The keyboards are country specific i.e. the 3 digit country code is seen near the end of the description for the keyboard e.g. USI = USA International, UKE = United Kingdom, THA =Thailand, SWE = Sweden etc. CHI (Chicony), SRX and LTN etc are the keyboards manufacturer's ID code

Search online using the part number only appropriate to your particular model variant to find suppliers that suit you best. Usually the part number can be found somewhere on the underside of the keyboard if you wish to verify what the part number is, before ordering.

Go to p.86 to view the procedure to remove/replace the keyboard bezel assembly. The touchpad is part of the assembly.

Search online for T430 touchpad to hopefully find suppliers of just the touchpad. More likely you will get results for the keyboard palm rest assembly including touchpad (or sometimes not including touchpad)
