HP doesn't accept input from HDMI/DisplayPort Cable, but does from...

I have an HP ProDisplay P202.

I can connect my MacBook A with USB-C using <USB-C to DisplayPort cable> and use the monitor, but the following doesn’t work:

Macbook A to <USB-C Vava HUB> then <HDMI to DisplayPort Cable #1>

Macbook A to <USB-C Vava HUB> then <HDMI to DisplayPort Cable #2>

Apple TV with HDMI using <HDMI to DisplayPort Cable #1 or #2>

Macbook B with HDMI using <HDMI to DisplayPort Cable #1 or #2>

I can’t figure out what the issue is since monitor works with one cable, but not HDMI cable - is there something about HDMI to DisplayPort that prevents it from working correctly?
