I have connected my computer to my TV using an HDMI cable, so I do get sound from the TV when I use an Youtube video. The problem is that I have the 2.1 system connected to the jack in the rear of the TV - and it is picking up no sound at all.

I looked at the on line docs for your LG 37LF65 tv and the only audio out I see is an optical output. Does your 2.1 audio system have an optical input? If so then that is how it needs to be hooked up to the tv audio output channel.

Hi,
To add to the answer, you also need to set the TV speaker setting to OFF when connecting an external audio system.
Go to Menu > Audio > TV Speaker > Off then EXIT to return to the normal viewing screen.
