PS3 controller charging problems

When I connect my PS3 controller to the charger it doesn't start charging right off. I have to plug and unplug it so many times. I thought the cable might have a short but there is no pattern to when it starts charging. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if you have to do it a certain way. Can someone help?

Hi @alioop2605 ,

First use a strong light and a magnifying glass to check if the charge port enclosure is clear of any obstruction such as lint or dust. Also check that the pins are all there and that they straight and parallel with each other.

If there is any debris in the enclosure, use a vacuum cleaner to try and suck it out. DO NOT use a metal probe as you may damage the pins. If you have to dislodge any stubborn material, use a wooden toothpick to gently prise it out.

If it seems OK then perhaps the connector is loose on the motherboard.

Here is a link to the ifixit DualShock 3 Motherboard Replacement guide.

It is helpful as it shows how to dis-assemble the controller to get access to the motherboard. The USB charge port is clearly visible in the images in the guide from Step.7 on.

If the connector is loose then you'll need SMD (surface mounted device) soldering skills and tools to effect the repair.

If this seems a bit to daunting (the soldering I mean) take the motherboard to a reputable, professional mobile phone, electronics or laptop repair service and ask for a quote to resolder the connector. They have the correct tools and more importantly the skill to do the job.

Would it be cheaper to buy a new controller if I have to take it somewhere to get repaired?

Also thank you very much for the info.

Hi @alioop2605 ,

You're welcome.

I don't know what the repair price would be.

If you took just the motherboard (with the loose USB charge port either still on it or you still had it) to a repairer, the job itself would be quick. Since the repairer wouldn't have to dis-assemble / re-assemble the controller {that's your job} ;-) hopefully the cost would be reduced as there is less to do.

You can only contact them, explain the problem i.e. loose USB connector needs resoldering, if that's what it is and ask.

Here is a link to suppliers of same type controllers. You may have to do your own search on Ebay as my link shows prices in AUD Aust. dollars You can use your search results as a comparison with the cost from a repairer, (try a few) and then make a decision that suits you.

Cheers.
