error booting windows vista

i need advice. heres my problem.... i have a dell 1541 and a dell 6400. the motherboard seems to be dead in the 1541. both the lcd screen and hardrive are working fine. the 6400 has a cracked screen. i changed the 1541 screen into the 6400 and works perfect. now i want to transfer the 1541 hdd to the 6400. done this but vista wont boot. i know the drivers are different and what not. heres my question. if i create a recovery disk from the 6400 hdd and and try 'repair disc' option on startup with the 1541 hdd installed, will this correct the drivers on the new hdd so vista will boot and not loose any of my files and programmes installed on it?

Hi,

Is the HDD being 'seen' in BIOS on the new laptop?

What happens when you start the laptop?

Are there any error messages coming on the screen?

I think that to save your data that you would be better off to purchase a USB 2.5" HDD enclosure to install the HDD into and connect it to a laptop or a pc to recover the data. Recovering the programs will not work this way as they are "installed" in the OS.

Changing the HDD with the OS installed from one laptop to another would probably cause Windows "activation" problems, and all that entails, as it is now tied into a new motherboard, which makes Windows think that it is a new pc, (which it is, well different anyway) and the licence (probably an OEM) specifies only on one pc. You would have to contact Microsoft and explain and hopefully get an activation key to get it to work properly. (I think, as that is how it used to be).
