The newer (2019+) kettles have no screws in the lid. There is a spring on a small post in the lid that keeps the catch extended. When closing the lid the sloped bottom of the catch engages the rim of the kettle and slides back into the lid. When the lid is pushed all the way down, the spring pops the catch forward under the rim of the kettle keeping the lid closed. When you push the button on the handle, a small lever inside the lid slides the catch back into the lid away from the rim allowing the lid to pop open. When the spring’s small post breaks, they always do, the catch will no longer slide forward under the kettle rim to hold the lid.

The FIX: Carefully pry the very top of the lid from the bottom section of the lid. A butter knife works very well to reach between the top of the silicone gasket on the bottom section of the lid and the underside of the lid’s top section. Once the top is off, you’ll see the stainless steel spring, where the small post has broken off and the mechanism that controls the catch.

Heat a straight pin red hot and push it through the tall lip on the lid base that top snaps onto. Push the pin through just to either side of the small pin that holds the silicone gasket at the front edge of the lid base. now reattach one side of the spring to the catch mechanism, and loop the other end through the pinhole you made in the lip. You must take a sharp knife and make a single cut in the TOP section lip that aligns with the spring you just installed on the bottom section lip. The spring on the lower lip will slip into that cut allowing you to snap the top lid section back onto the bottom lid section.

A little long-winded because there are no pictures but read through the above as you work on the kettle and you’ll find it pretty easy.

Good luck

Same problem, and after reading your instructions a couple of times & trying 2 different pins (first was too flimsy) I was able to attach spring to pinhole without even adding that little cut in the top of lid. Works perfectly again, thanks so much!

Unscrew the two screws under the lid, Inside is the latch, a spring and two levers. These need to be reset in proper position and then reassembled. The original spring went flying to somewhere unknown as I was trying to set it in position so I cut a spring from a pen to use instead.

It would be most helpful if a diagram or instruction film would show the proper way to fix it. Although the lid of my kettle (Adler Ad1224) has 2 screws but I can't get to it. Cheers Robin
