Max amount of Memory A1176?

I know that the Max memory on the original 2006 model mini's is 2 GB. However on the later 2008 model mini's it's 3 or 4 GB. Is there anyway to make an early model mini use 3 or 4 GB?

Seeing as they use the same chipset in theory it should be possible.

My guess would be it's a firmware issue?

According to Mactracker the max for memory on that unit is 2GB. Sorry.

All A1176 models can access 3Gb of RAM. The early models with firmware 1,1 can be flashed to 2,1 to access that amount. This processor itself must be upgraded to utilize this feature, as the core solo and core duo are limited to 2Gb.

2 or 3 depending on the CPU and the memory controller in the system

  • 2 GB with a Core Duo (T2300 or T2400) CPU or Core Solo (T1200) CPU
  • 3 GB with Core 2 Duo (T5600 or T7200) CPU

I'm now still using A1176 (T5600) as a server.

I have installed 2x2GB RAM but only 3GB is usable.

Mac OS 10.7.5 Lion can recognize there are 2x2GB memory modules installed but only 3GB can be used.

The specs of your system: Mac mini 1.83 MHz Core 2 Duo T5600 (Mid 2007)

And yes the Max the system can see here is 3 GB. You could have used One 1 GB and One 2 GB memory module to have achieved the same thing.

I've upgraded to T7200 and installed a ubuntu 16.04 server. but it could not boot ubuntu without a monitor, while mac os 10.7.5 could. Anybody knows how to boot headless for ubuntu?

Having the same problem here. Just bought a headless/dummy DVI plug to emulate a monitor.

Gentlemen, I have not done any of this YET with the Mac Mini. But be it know that some of the manufactures original specs are based on what is being produced at the time if 1GB memory sticks were all that was around then Apple would have to say the most memory possible is 2 GB with 2 memory slots available, That does NOT mean that when memory companies started producing 2GB memory modules that they would not work and you could now have 4 GB of memory as in this case. of course I don't know absolutely if this is the case here. but it certainly has been true in many other cases so I would thoroughly check it out. As a tech I have proven this statement true in other cases many times. with Memory and CPU's.

The memory controller and the videos memory addressing also play a part here in the early systems.

Apple used a fixed address space for the video which limits the memory to 3 GB of addressable RAM on the early Core 2 Duo systems.

The Solo & Core Duo systems where limited to 2 GB because of the memory controller Apple used.

Dan, The memory controller is identical in the hardware, it just needs a firmware update. As long as the processor is core 2 duo, you can firmware flash the 1,1 models (core solo and core duo) to firmware 2,1 (core 2 duo). You can then access 3Gb of ram. I have done this firmware flash on dozens of core solo with upgraded T7200 or T7600 processors.

If you look at the chart in wiki for the year and model you will find it states 2 GB for ram. You have to get to 2009 to have 4GB same as Mactracker.
