Everything I try to connect to my display through usb will not be recognized. However this only seems to happen whenever I have my Mac connected to my display and I put my Macbook to sleep. When I try to wake it up, the usb ports on the display don't work anymore.

The source of the problem seems to come from having your Mac in sleep mode while still connected to the display. In light of that, whenever you put your Mac to sleep, disconnect the display from your Mac.
