Hold the menu and center button until you see the Apple logo. If you see the Apple logo, immediately release the menu and the center button.
Do not use too much power holding the iPod classic. If you hold the iPod classic menu and the center button too much, the menu and center button dosen't work.

A Godsend! I was about to bin my Classic, which has a vast amount of songs on it, as it shut down mid play a few days ago and wouldn't respond to any button or to the charger. Hey presto, it is back to life, though why it shut down I do not know.
