Use this guide to pick up a dropped stitch in your knitting project. A dropped stitch can begin to unravel a person’s progress and even unravel the finished product. Dropped stitches occur when a live stitch slips off of the working needle and starts to unravel. A sweater or pair of socks that comes unraveled is of little use and is likely to end up in a landfill.

You will first pick up the dropped stitch using the left needle. Then you will use the right needle to lift the dropped stitch over the bar of yarn for each row that the stitch has dropped.

Locate the dropped stitch.
A dropped stitch is a loop of unsecured yarn, which means that no yarn is going through the loop.

Insert the left needle through the loop of the dropped stitch.
You may use the right needle to grab the dropped stitch, but the dropped stitch must end on the left needle.

Locate the bar of yarn behind the dropped stitch.
Depending on how many rows the stitch has unraveled, there may be multiple bars of yarn. If the stitch has unraveled more than one row, locate the bottom bar.
