Calculator will not turn on

No matter what you try the calculator will not turn on

Low Contrast

The contrast may have been turned down on the calculator. Hit the (2ND) button and then the up arrow button to raise the contrast. Repeat until the contrast is at the level you like.

Dead Batteries

The batteries may be dead. Replace the batteries with four new AAA batteries. Follow our guide to do so here.

Dead Backup Battery

The backup battery may be dead. Replace the backup battery by following our guide to do so here.

RAM Issue

The RAM in your calculator may be corrupted. Before preceding learn how to back up your calculator here. Press and hold the (CLEAR) button while removing and replacing a battery. Caution: This will delete your calculator's RAM, but if you followed the instructions above then you can get this back easily.

Software Issue

The software in your calculator may be corrupted. Before preceding learn how to back up your calculator here. Press and hold the (DEL) button while removing and replacing a battery. Caution: This will delete your calculator's software, but if you followed the instructions above then you can get this back easily.

Motherboard Issue

The motherboard may be broken. To replace it follow our guide here.

Screen is black

There are either black spots on the screen or the entire screen is black

High Contrast

If the whole screen is black it is likely that the contrast may have been turned up on the calculator. Press the (2ND) button and then the down arrow button to lower the contrast. Repeat this until the contrast is at the level you like.

Broken Screen

If there are only spots of black on the screen the screen may have been cracked and damaged due to pressure that was applied to the screen. To replace the screen follow our instructions here.

Buttons are not responding

Some or all buttons do nothing when the are pressed

Stuck Buttons

The buttons may simply be stuck under the front plate. Try massaging the buttons to become unstuck or take the front plate off and put it back on making sure that buttons do not get stuck. To remove the front plate follow our guide here.

Broken Button or Keyboard

Some component of the keyboard, either certain buttons or the whole keyboard, is not operating correctly. Follow our instructions here to replace the entire keyboard. Or here to replace individual broken keys.

Programs have disappeared or are malfunctioning

After removing the motherboard assembly for painting the housing my calculator did not power on at all. Ended up pressing random buttons and it powered on and works!

My used 84 plus silver kept shutting down after 3 seconds after upgrading the OS. Removing the AAA as well as the backup fixed the problem. Hoping the fix stays.

what if as soon as you cut it on you can't do anything no matter what button you push? The cursor isn't flashing and i can't turn it off it has to cut off on its own. How do i fix this

So my daughter just had this issue. I resolved by taking apart the calculator and cleaning all the buttons.

- remove back cover screws (x6)

- remove battery back up screw (x1)

- remove back cover

- remove foil cover screws (x2)

- remove foil

- remove mother board screws (x4)

- remove mother board

- flip back over and take picture of keyboard layout …

- flip back and remove mother board

- remove keys in the proper layout

- remove keyboard rubber board

- using alcohol and q-tips

- clean all the flower looking buttons on the mother board

- clean all the black areas on rubber side

- clean any exposed metal areas on mother board including battery interface

- reassemble

- and that did the trick for my daughters calculator …
