If the buttons on your Sony WH-CH710N headphones do not respond when pressed, preventing control of power, volume, or playback functions, this troubleshooting page may have a solution.
Battery is Low
A low or depleted battery can make the buttons unresponsive. As the battery drains, it may no longer provide stable power to the controller.
- Charge for at least 30-60 minutes
- Use a reliable cable and wall adapter
- Once charged, try the buttons again
Temporary Glitches
A hard restart can help fix unresponsive buttons because it clears temporary glitches of internal electronics and software. Firmware can get stuck due to rapid button presses, Bluetooth connection errors, and low battery behavior.
Steps to reset the headset:
- Plug the headphones into a USB-C charger
- Press the power button and the NC/AMB (noise cancellation/Ambient Sound Mode) simultaneously
- Headphones will reset
Software Glitches
A factory reset helps clear frequent internal errors and restore default behavior. The microcontroller may be stuck, which can cause buttons to not register upon pressing.
Steps to factory reset the headset:
- Turn off headset
- Hold the power button and the (play/call) button simultaneously for 7 seconds or more.
- The indicator (blue light) will flash 4 times
- Delete any pairing connections made prior to factory resetting the headset
- Reconnect headphones to device
Debris is Causing Button Malfunction
Under each button is a small switch that needs physical contact to register a press. Overtime, debris such as dust, skin oils, and lint, can build up and create a barrier along the buttons. This may affect the switches used to trigger the buttons. Removing dirt or debris from the buttons can restore responsiveness. For a detailed instructions, check out the How to Clean the Ports in Your Electronic Device guide.
Steps to clean:
- Use a microfiber cloth
- Lightly dampen a cloth will isopropyl alcohol (70% or more)
- Gently clean around button edges
- Use a toothpick or soft brush for crevices
Moisture or Corrosion with Hardware
Sweat and humidity can get inside the device, causing inconsistent electrical signals when pressing the buttons.
If the buttons are exposed to liquid of any kind
- Immediately power off the device
- Let set in dry air for 24-48 hours
- Avoid heat of any kind
Buttons are Faulty and/or Broken
Repeated use over time can cause the buttons to break or come loose from their internal wiring. If the buttons do not work after attempting the fixes listed above, then the buttons may need to be replaced (refer to the video link below for a visual guide). If you are unsure about replacing a battery, seek professional support
