Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G2 ITL Unresponsive Screen
Screen refuses to power on or does not respond to mouse and keyboard input. Screen could also have a black lit but remains black.
Faulty Battery
The screen is turned off with no power source activating it. This could be due to a lack of battery charge, a faulty internal battery connection to the motherboard, degraded battery that can no longer hold a charged, or a failed POST (Power-On Self-Test) which is a diagnostic sequence computers run before entering the computer's operation system.
Solutions
Begin by plugging the ThinkBook 14 into a working 65w power supply and letting it charge for at least 10-15 minutes before attempting to power it on. If the charging light fails to turn on try a different power supply to rule out a broken power supply as the cause.
Next, perform a hard reset by holding the power button for 30 seconds, then releasing and pressing it again. This drains any remaining residual power charge in the motherboard and can potentially resolve a failed POST. If the screen still won't display an image, power the device off and take the bottom panel off. Once the panel is off inspect the battery for any inflation or swelling. If no swelling is present check the connector on the motherboard for any burnt or broken parts before unplugging and reseating it.
If POST failure is suspected find the RAM stick and release the retaining pins to then remove and reseat the RAM; also find the CMOS battery on the left to reseat it.
Faulty Keyboard or Trackpad
When there is no image being displayed but the screen has a blacklight to it, this indicates the panel is receiving power but is not receiving a valid video input or that the signal has failed internally. This could be due to loose or damaged ribbon cables which provide input to the screen. A malfunctioning trackpad can also cause this issue due to preventing the device from booting up correctly.
Solutions
To narrow the issue down, plug in an external keyboard and mouse to test if they wake the screen up. If nothing happens power the device off and take the bottom panel off. Locate the ribbon cable connector in the upper left region and carefully but forcefully lift the metal locking tab to allow for inspection for any burnt or broken parts before unplugging and reseating it.
If the trackpad is unresponsive, power the device off and use the factory reset pin on the right side of the ThinkBook 14 with something thin but strong like a paperclip. Press until you either hear or feel a click and hold it for 5 seconds before releasing it.
If the keyboard and/or trackpad continue to be unresponsive replace the keyboard or the trackpad as needed.
Dead or Crack Screen
When the screen shows no signs of receiving power and doesn't register keyboard or trackpad inputs this indicates the screen has become faulty. This could be caused by a visible crack on the screen, a hairline or internal crack that's not visible, the screen panel has died, or lastly, cables have become faulty. These issues could have been caused from old age or dropping the device a few feet onto hard surfaces.
Solutions
First check for any obvious screen cracks and then under an external bright light to check for any hairline cracks. Next find a spare HDMI or USB-C 3.0+ cable and either a monitor or TV to connect to the ThinkBook 14. If an image is displayed then the screen has either died from old age, has an internal crack, or the cables have failed. If no image is shown then the ThinkBook 14's the integrated GPU, which is built directly into the CPU, has potentially run into issues which are not easily fixed. This would be due to the CPU being soldered directly to the motherboard.
To inspect the screen cables and followed by the screen, power the device off and take the bottom panel off. To properly inspect the screen and its cables please refer to replacing the screen.
