Beater Scrapes Bottom of Bowl or Doesn't Reach Contents On Bottom

When using the mixer, the beater scrapes against the bottom of the bowl or doesn't mix the contents at the bottom of the bowl, meaning it's either too low or too high.

Beater is At the Wrong Height

Turn the mixer off and unplug it or disconnect power. Tilt the top back and there should be a screw on the hinge between the head of the mixer and the stand. Turn the screw slightly counterclockwise (to the left) to raise the beater or clockwise (to the right right) to lower it.

Doesn't Turn On

When plugged in and receiving power, the mixer doesn't turn on or spin.

Excessive Use and Overheating

Unplug your mixer and let it sit for 30 minutes. Excessive use may have led to overheating, in which case the device may have shut itself off to avoid damage.

Motor Brush Worn Out

If your mixer is plugged in and it still won't turn on, the motor brushes may be worn out or inserted incorrectly and would need to be replaced. Check out our guide here on how to replace them.

Won't Turn Off Unless Unplugged

The speed lever of your mixer won't function. To turn off your mixer you have to unplug it or disconnect power.

Speed Lever Broken

If the lever doesn't stay in the OFF position or moving the lever to OFF doesn't turn it off, then it may need to be replaced.

Loose Bolts on Circuit Board

If the mixer doesn't stay off then there may be bad connections near the circuit board or the speed control plate. To check this, take off the screw on the rear cover and take off the rear cover to expose the speed control plate and circuit board. Check the connections to ensure that any bolts aren't loose and touching any of the connections.

Speed Lever Movement does not Change Speed of Mixer

When using the mixer, speed positions 1-10 all cause the mixer to go at the same speed. But it still turns off when in the OFF position

Speed Control Plate Malfunctioning

If all the speeds are the same, then the speed control plate may be malfunctioning or may have loose wires. Check out our guide here on how to replace it.

Faulty Circuit Board

If all the speeds are the same, then the circuit board may be faulty. Check out our guide here on how to replace it.

Grinding Noise or Doesn't Turn

The mixer is very loud while in use and/or you can hear grinding coming from the inside. Or the mixer is turned on and you can hear the motor but the mixer doesn't turn.

Worm Gear Failure

If the mixer is making a loud grinding noise, the worm gear within the mixer may be causing it. The worm gear is a plastic gear that is designed to fail if something goes wrong inside the mixer, so that the motor doesn't burn out. Check out a guide here on how to replace it on a similar model of mixer.

Old or Insufficient Gear Grease

After years of use, the mixer may be lacking the required grease to help the gears spin smoothly. This may cause it to rattle or make noise. To fix this, replace the old gear grease with fresh new grease, trying to clean as much of the old grease out as possible to prevent oil from dripping.

Mixer Leaking Oil

Oil can be seen accumulating on the outside of the front of the mixer, near the planetary, and may be dripping into the bowl while mixing.

Old or Insufficient Gear Grease

If the mixer sits for too long or is old, then oil may separate from the gear grease and begin to drip out of the mixer while in use. To fix this, replace the old gear grease with fresh new grease, trying to clean as much of the old grease out as possible to prevent further oil from dripping.

Have a new stand mixer (lift bowl) where the beater is the wrong height. The screw will turn one direction only. Can’t locate a solution. Wonder why Kitchenaid doesn’t have someone to answer phones on the weekend when we are all using our new appliances.
