Keyboard not working

The Chromebook's keyboard is not responding.

Dead battery

If the keyboard is not responding properly then the battery might be dead. Plug the power supply into the Chromebook and turn it on.

Specific keys not working

If certain keys aren't working then there is a problem with the keyboard. Check out our keyboard replacement guide.

Screen not working

The Chromebook's screen is not turning on.

Dead battery

If the screen is black make sure that the Chromebook's battery is charged. Try powering your Chromebook on by holding the power button down for six seconds. If you cannot power it on, plug it into the power supply and charge it.

Low brightness

A reason for the black screen could be that the Chromebook's brightness is turned all the way down. Turn up the brightness using the brightness key located next to the mute button on the keyboard.

Broken screen

If the screen is still not turning on it is possible that there is something wrong with the screen itself. This could be caused by dropping the Chromebook, sitting on the Chromebook, or improper use of the Chromebook. Check out our screen replacement guide.

No space available

The chromebook has no available space for storage.

Too many downloads

One reason why the Chromebook could have no available space is because there are too many downloaded files on the hard drive. A way to free space is to delete some files. To access the storage on the Chromebook click on the bottom left corner on the grid button, then open the Files app.

Faulty hard drive

A faulty hard drive will give other symptoms that make it easier to diagnose as well. These other symptoms can include corrupted data files, a clicking sound from within the computer, or freezing of the computer. You can scan your hard drive with S.M.A.R.T. on the computer itself to diagnose: do this by searching for the S.M.A.R.T. application on your laptop. If the hard drive is damaged check out our motherboard replacement guide.

Overheating chromebook

The chromebook is hot to touch.

Overheating processor

To determine if your processor is overheating see if the bottom of the Chromebook feels hot to the touch. This could be caused by a warm environment, or not allowing enough airflow to the processor. Turn off the Chromebook for 20 minutes and move the laptop to a cooler environment. Make sure the Chromebook is receiving air flow. After the Chromebook has been turned off for 20 minutes, turn it back on and check if the problem is resolved.

Defective battery

The battery may be defective. This could be the cause of the overheating. The best way to cool down the battery is to remove it and set it in a cool environment. Then after letting it cool for about 15 minutes, reinstall the battery and turn it on to see if the problem has been fixed. If this doesn’t work, check out our battery replacement guide.

Virus

If the battery is working properly there might be a virus affecting your laptop. Run a virus scan to see if this is the case. Some free online virus scanners are HouseCall, McAfee, and Malware. After running a scan you will be able to determine what kind of virus is present and how to take further actions.

Wifi connection is sporadic or nonexistant

The chromebook has issues connecting to local wifi. This prevents access to the internet.

Setting issues

Make sure your wifi is enabled and the correct wifi is selected. To do this, click on the wifi icon in the bottom right hand side of the screen. If the wifi is on, there should be a list of available wifi networks. If a list doesn’t show up, then there should be an option on the pop-up to enable wifi. Make sure that the wifi you intend to connect with is selected. If this is not the issue, first try turning the wifi on and off. Next, try restarting your computer.

Router/modem/provider issues

It is possible that the issue is external and has nothing to do with your laptop’s ability to connect. To confirm this, check if the wifi connection works on other devices. If none of your devices are able to connect, this may be an issue with your router, modem, or your service provider. First try to restart your router and modem. If this doesn’t help, call your service provider to find out if they are experiencing service losses in your area.

Broken wifi card

If you have determined that the problem isn’t the settings or external devices, then it may be an internal hardware issue. The most comprehensive fix is to replace your wifi chip which is on the motherboard. If this is the case, check out our motherboard replacement guide.

Taking too long to load

The chromebook is not loading

Virus

If startup and performance are slow, popup messages appear, or new programs run, check your antivirus software for a virus. If you do not have antivirus software, buy and download antivirus software. If there is a virus, consult an IT expert to remove virus.

Too many startup programs

Sometimes when the Chromebook has too many programs running it will be slow. To resolve this issue try to close some of these running programs, this will allow for your Chromebook to run faster.

Faulty RAM

If the computer was initially booting up fine, but over time it is taking longer to load pages, check the hard drive usage. If there is plenty of hard drive available, clean the computer components of dust and hairs. If the components are clean then there is a faulty RAM. Check out our motherboard replacement guide.

USB ports not responding

The Chromebook's USB ports are not identifying any devices.

Faulty USB cord

One reason why the Chromebook is not recognizing a plugged in device could be because the USB cord is not completely plugged in. Try taking the cord out and plugging it back in. If this does not resolve the issue then there could be a problem with the cord itself. Try using another USB cord.

Faulty daughterboard

If the USB cord is completely plugged in and is still not working there is a possibility that the daughterboard is broken. Check out our daughterboard replacement guide.
