Slow charge and adapter overheating would point to a bad adapter. The slow charge would be a result of the phone not getting enough current. The overheated adapter would be a result of trying to draw more current than the adapter can supply. So, if the adapter is speced to be capable of handling your phone requirements, then it is defective.
