The Xtreme 3 from JBL is a Bluetooth-powered speaker, and is the 3rd generation of the Xtreme series of speakers.

Issues With My Extreme 3 Speaker, Need Tech Savy Help

Hey,

So I got myself an Extreme 3 speaker, that had stopped working after being dropped in a swimming pool. Yes it was an impulsive buy.

It powers up and connects to my phone, but no music or sounds come out of it, including no sounds when it connects n powers up/down. The volume button on the phone and speaker communicate with each other. The battery doesnt hold charge either.

Question is, whats the chances of problems being resolved if I replace the main board and battery??

Or does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Any help is much appreciated, thx in advance

Rob

Hi @rob57580

You could try cleaning all the electronic components, switches etc and also replacing the battery and check if it starts to work OK

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the speaker's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

Bit late now but do not try to charge or to turn on your speaker again and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the speaker to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the speaker and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives which may leave conductive residues and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes what happens. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the speaker might possibly work correctly again.

Here is the ifixit JBL Xtreme 3 that may help

If this process seems too daunting, take your speaker to a reputable, professional electronics repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Thanks for that Jayeff.

I did actually take it apart the other day with the intention of giving it a clean but I think I got overwhelmed with the idea of putting it back together I didnt actually give it a thorough check, just a quick look n then put it back together, which wasnt too bad in the end.lol.

I'll have another go today hopefully. Would a medium bristled tooth brush be OK to use on it with some IPA?

Failing that, should I try replacing the main board?

Thanks, Rob

A soft bristled brush would be better, Do not apply too much IPA in a given spot when trying to remove any stubborn corrosion. Allow it to dry first and then clean somewhere else before coming back to it. If the board gets too wet (even with IPA this can happen) then there's a possibility of the traces lifting off the board.

Slow and steady is best.

Good luck
