Temperature error in FaceTime

Hey guys. I’ve been working on the Mac recently, and it’s been giving me a headache. I recently solved a problem with it running extremely slow, thinking that the Mac detected my replaced battery and rejected it. Eventually the performance increased a little, but not much. Now when I head into FaceTime, it simply states “Temperature: Video will resume when Mac cools down.” I understand that could be an issue except the Mac is not even warm. I left it off all night and just woke it up to see if something changed, but the error remains.

It makes me think that the issue I was dealing with about it running extremely slow was related to this. I think the Mac’s thermal sensors think the Mac is very hot and needs to cool, therefore lowering the performance. So, is there an easy way to fix this? Or would it require a Logic Board replacement?

I did try to replace the Trackpad flex cable, but as you can see, the one on the right it the replacement, the cable was defective when I got it.

I would like to say, after playing around with that app, I found the Mac was registering 122 degrees Fahrenheit. The Mac was also cold… something is definitely wrong

@jadonlyon - Well it does appear you have a sensor which is either seeing a heat issue or is faulty. SMC is seeing a failure and so is TG Pro. So, is the battery or the trackpad needs replacing? Do you have access an IR detector to identify the hot spot?

@danj - What's terrible is that I just replaced the battery following iFixit's guide... according to this post that I just finished asking: Mac slows drastically after battery change , the battery is in a good condition, and is working just fine.

@danj - And, no, I do not have an IR camera, sadly. I have been trying to feel where the Mac gets hot with my hands (I know that is not as accurate) and really it hasn't gotten hot at all up until I start copying large files to the internal drive. Like when I am downloading apps from the App Store. It will download very quickly, but then take forever to install. That's when I feel heat coming from where the logic board is.

@jadonlyon - I do remember your older post. So which do you think is bad? I’m suspecting the trackpad got damaged in the battery replacement process. I would make a through inspection of both the trackpad and the cable for damage. But I can’t swear to that!

Let’s gets some diagnostic data. The fist is to see if the onboard diagnostics reports any errors. Restart the system and press the startup command D key to enter, let us know what the errors are if you get any.

Next is to visually see what the system thermal sensors are reporting. I find TG Pro offers the needed data. Install it and let’s get a snapshot of the Apps main window when you get the error in FaceTime making sure to capture all of the sensors (scroll the slide to get the bottom) post it here so we can review it.

Let’s see what you discover!

Did you replace the battery following the iFixit guide? It's quite an involved process and there are a lot of places where something could be damaged if you aren't careful.

The measurement that stands out to me is the palm rest temperature of 50C (122F). This is way hotter than the rest of the laptop and I wouldn't expect that to be the case. I'm not 100% sure where this sensor is on the 2016 Retina Macbook, but it's typically in the trackpad assembly, so it may be worth trying to re-seat that connector (step 32 in the guide), and trying again.

Is there any other odd behavior you've seen with the laptop that isn't temperature related? Is it charging properly? Does the camera work in the photobooth app? Does WiFi work, and does it recognize USB peripherals? Any issues here could help narrow down the root problem

@chrisgreen - Yes, I followed iFixit's guide. And sadly I did damage the Retina flex cable, so I had to get a new one. After I got the flex cable and calibrated the battery, I started noticing issues immediately. But, I had always got an SMC error with Apple Diagnostics, even before I replaced the battery.

Now, I do have to confess, I am waiting for the flex cable for the trackpad. I haven't had a flex cable for the trackpad in a while, and I have been running the Mac using my Magic Mouse and keyboard up until I can get a new flex cable (though honestly I can't remember if that broke before or after the battery replacement.) But, if the palm-rest sensor is in the trackpad assembly, that means it's not connected to the logic board at all :(

@chrisgreen - Also, everything else works great! In fact, when I first saw issues with FaceTime, I immediately checked Photo Booth and QuickTime Player. The FaceTime Camera worked on both of these apps. WiFi works great, USB-C works great, though it does seem to be a bit slower than most USB-Cs I have used, and it charges very quickly and the battery seems to give me several hours of life. Easily 6-8 hours (I am not exactly sure).

It sounds to me like the missing trackpad flex cable is the culprit for the palm rest temperature. If this has been bad for a while, it could be the source of your problems. Generally these machines misbehave when peripherals are missing / damaged.

@chrisgreen - Okay. Today I will take it to a technician and see if he has the parts to get it up and running again.

@chrisgreen - Okay so, the technician tried charging ninety dollars for the flex cable, and it’s only eight in eBay. So… I am going to have to wait for the eBay to come in. Thanks for your help! I’ll update eventually
