Dell U3415w service manual or advice

My Dell U3415W monitor is out of warranty and devleoped the dreaded screen corruption, that causes the screen to show a combination of Pink/Green blocks, almost like the good old days of a frequencey problem, that you could see the screen, but was all blocky!

Anyway, I removed all PC cables, ran the monitor diagnostics and the LCD panel reports perfectly ok, but attach any computer (tried a variety of models) using any of the input connectors and the same issue occurs.

I dismantled the monitor and removed the PCBthat all the cables enter into, and nothing obvious appeared, like burnt chip, swollen capacitor etc… but there was large heatsink in the middle of the board that I removed by desoldering it, and the heat compound on the chip was just on one side, so I thought a quick clean, new compound and I woudl be winning… but alas, the same issue occured.

I have did the google searches, nothing, though there are a few other people with the same issue, and when they contact Dell they are just told, if it’s out of warranty, tough, buy a new monitor. If under warranty we will swap it out…

The annoying thing here is that the LCD screen is perfectly fine, so logically it’s the main PCB that has the issue, and I have tried to find a service manual for the monitor as well, but getting absolutely nowhere. Considering that teh Dell monitors are manufactured for them, I have been trying to find out by WHO, and see if they would have a service manual or a replacemernt PCB I coudl buy… but again… I’m hitting a brick wall at every turn.

It’s so frustrating that I have a quality scree, let down by a small component, and nobody is interested in me trying to repair the thing… just bin it and move on…

So, I know the odds are stacked against me here, but apart from trying to buy a second hand board from abroad off of eBay, does anyone have any suggestions in trying to find a solution to this fault??

Update (12/31/2020)

All the searching I have done, tends to keep going to ebay, and the same list of boards from America keep appearing.

As I’m in the UK, if I’m going to try a used board, I would rather do it as cheaply as possible, rather than throw good money into a component that may or may not work… the postage and import duty from the states is more than the part itself!

Considering that the board is easy to remove, it’s pretty crap that Dell isn’t interested in any way of helping to source a replacement board, or provide any schematics, or location to buy spare parts from.

I have bypassed the usual online support side now and contacted Michael Dell via twitter to see if there is any response ( probably a better chance of catching the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot) - but it’s so sad that we still live in a world that the big boys don’t want to help you repair something, and would rather you just buy new.

Try searching for the mainboard's 'board number' schematics to hopefully get results. e.g. "(insert board number) schematics"

The board number is printed on the board itself. It may possibly be more easily identified if it includes a Revision number after it e.g. Rev.1.00 etc.

A lot of times the same mainboards in monitors / computers etc are used in different brands and the boards are actually made by specialist board manufacturers rather than by the device manufacturer. So there may be more information out there if it is a known problem with the board more than the brand.

Worth a try if you haven’t already done so.

As you said, all that's out there is replacement boards, no schematics or even repair kits that are sometimes available for known trouble boards.

Just verifying that you did try "factory resetting" the monitor, as you didn't mention doing that?

OSD menus > Others > Factory reset.

Did the monitor reset, upgraded the monitor firmware as well (and that was tricky to find) - Tested the monitor on other computers, the inbuilt diagnostics show the screen and text on the screen in perfect, pixel quality... but, as soon as any computer is plugged in via each of the monitor inputs, the same screen distortion appears. I'm just putting the finishing touches to a YouTube video to show the issue and show how I got into the monitor...

The frustration of having such a good quality LCD panel passing all the tests, but something on the PCB having an issue is so utterly frustrating!! Considering that I had an old Dell P2714H in storage, I'll continue to use this until that too dies, but my happiness in using Dell is rather tainted after the way they have handled things.

Check the output of the vidéo chip with an oscope.
